I've currently got a cut down sim in my iphone but wish to put a proper nano sim into it. I've had a nano sim delivered. My question is how do I activate the new nano sim under the old number?

Put the 6 didgit code in from your new sim
On the next page it'll show the 6 didgit activation codes and sim serial numbers of your current and new sim cards
Click where it says...
"Yes I want to replace my SIM"
( on mobile browsers don't forget to scroll down to see)
On the next page click "yes I'm sure"
Your new sim will hopefully be active within 30 minutes
And your old sim will be disabled

here is how to do one I hope it helps
It should only take a few minutes to do a SIM swap. Once you’ve received your new SIM, simply log into My giffgaff, go to giffgaff.com/activate and kick off by inserting the 6 digit activation code on your new SIM card and clicking ‘Activate me’.
SIM swap is quick and easy, but please bear in mind that it’s also non-reversible and your current SIM card will stop working. There will also be a short delay before the new SIM card is up and running, so it’s worth picking the right moment. For this reason, there are a couple of opportunities to double check…
And triple check the details, just to be sure that we’re getting it right.
To help with this, you will see the SSN number for your current and new SIM cards on the screen. This number is printed on the back of every SIM, although with the nano SIM being so small, the first 6 digits will not appear on the nano SIM card (the first 6 digits will always be 894411).
And it’s that easy! Your account will usually be active on your new SIM card within a few minutes and then you’re ready to go!
