It looks good, but can the iPhone itself not pick (or be programmed to) the brand name out from the info on the SIM card?
Even 10 year old phones like Nokia 3210 or 5110 will do this, however it works.

It can and it does - unfortunately the brand name it finds when it looks on the SIM card is "O2-UK", as that's what is there to find! giffgaff is listed as the Line name rather than Network name - not sure what the difference is, but I guess some phones differentiate between the two and others don't, so some will display giffgaff and others O2-UK.

I don't know the technical details either, but both pieces of information are available somewhere, and some phones will show both at once, like the phone I just put the giffgaff SIM in to try, O2 - UK with giffgaff below in smaller writing. Older phones like the 2 I mentioned show the network for a second or so, then it's overwritten with the other.
I suppose I'm just a bit surprised that Apple don't sort this out, instead of leave their owners to it. Hmmm, but on the other hand, I don't suppose migration to an mvno was high up in their plan.
