"Also the *0# trick works on Vodafone, O2, Orange and T-Mobile."
This thread has been very helpful, and it's especially good to know that the *0# thing works on other networks too (I'm on a Vodafone SIM-only contract at the moment, thinking of getting a Giffgaff SIM in addition for international calls and 0845 numbers). Unfortunately my phone is so ancient that it doesn't type the * or the # into the display when I write a text - the * key is shift and the # key is space.... But I've just ordered a new phone so I'll try it out with that one ![]()

Thanks for the Handy hint. I'll give it a try as my handset keeps telling me that the message is not sent. However if I try to keep sending it it arrives at the destination phone multiple times?!
(there's no smiley confused so sad will have to do)
with regard to the super old handset not doing star plus hash as the three bottom keys...have you tried using the number 1 key and scrolling throughthe different symbols? Just a thought because my new sonyerricson phone wont let me star plus hash whilst in sms writing mode either i have to "add symbol"
don't know how you give kudos yet but kudos all the same ![]()

on some phones, pressing the # switches through the predictive text options, and then on some of those options (non-predictive on this one) the * key then has a symbols selection, which is a bit easier than repetitive pressing the 1
and to do kudos, press the yellow star type logo below the user's avatar, and the indicated number increases

Has anything come of this yet that texts can automatically send receipts?
Every other company I have been with before did it - and someone had mentioned O2 having problems - yet from THREE and VIRGIN i got receipts from all.
Also - I would disagree with the person saying a receipt just informs the persons network received the text. As when sending texts on the same network, you don't always receive the receipt at once.
Hacked off being screwed by big companies and doing something about it!

No. You still need to add the code at the start of your SMS if you want a delivery receipt.
It's a function of the way in which O2 - and therefore giffgaff - handles SMS.
The receipt is generated when the SMS is acepted by the recipient's handset.

What are the privacy implications of being able to check whether a phone is on or not?
This signature does not beg for kudos.
