Virgin VIP sim only £15

Hi, I know there have been several threads, to which I have contributed, recently but I thought I would start a new thread regarding my experience with this. Particularly regarding calls to 08 numbers.

It does seem an excellent offer, £15 for unlimited calls, text and interweb. The only thing that I was personally concerned with was the cost of calls to 08 numbers. It was very unclear from Virgin's website, and contradictory information from various internet sites as to whether or not they were included.

I thought that I would get a definite answer by asking a Virgin agent in a live chat session. While I don't think that I should actually post the chat session here, I will say that I asked specifically about the £15 SIM only VIP tariff, and was informed that calls to 08 numbers were included in the unlimited minutes. I subsequently also reported that here, as I obviously believed it to be correct.

My apologies for the misinformation. I transpires that calls to 08 numbers are only included in the more expensive handset contract purchases. The agent I spoke to made a mistake.I discovered this today by trying their service, with the SIM I ordered, and found that they are actually chargeable.

So, since I don't fancy paying up to 41p per minute for staying on hold with a customer service centre on the odd ocassion I need to call one (sometimes takes half an hour with holding and everything!) I won't be leaving here after all.

On the other hand, apart from the mistake the agent made, the whole process with Virgin was very simple and straightfoward. The sim arrived the next day (much quicker than giffgaff - same postie!), I simply placed it in my handset (iphone) and it worked right away, no messing around with settings. I found the 3G coverage to be be fantastic in the areas I tend to be (usually I don't get any from o2). I appreciate that's specific to where I live though.  Lifting adult restrictions involved a 20 second conversation with customer services. Itemised data usage and calls were available after about an hour (website says up to 30 minutes). Customer services were super friendly when it came to cancellation. It was like a breath of fresh air compared with the system in place here for agent contact.

Anyway, that's my (brief) experience with Virgin. Were they to include calls to 08 numbers, then I will leave for them, especially given the superior 3G performance (for me). But as they aren't, I really don't want, as a point of principle, to pay up to 41p a minute on the rare call I might need to make to an 0845 number. So I'll be staying put for the time being.

Lastly, my apologies to those I have misinformed. I'm going away with my tail between my legs now. :smileyembarrassed:

All the best

Graham

Great post Graham.  No need for tail between the legs though, not your fault you were misinformed.

Unlimited everything for £15 a month is a great deal, even without the 08 numbers being included.

Though, there's a service called WeQ4U (Android | Apple) which lets you type in most 08 numbers, and it will make the call from your inclusive minutes, on any network.

It calls an 03 number from your phone (which comes out of your bundle), and then diverts the call to the 08 number you requested.  I use it all the time for 087 numbers and it's great.

If you get stuck in a queue, you can press *9 and it lets you hang up the phone, it will call you back when your call is answered.

Look at him go!

Re: Virgin VIP sim only £15

Thanks fordaz, I use that app, but personally find it a wee bit hit and miss. Even then, sometimes you get through to a switchboard or something and I find it a bit of a pain. (BTW - did you see the guy who set it up on dragons den?)

I'll stay here, for the free 0800, and although expensive, "bearable" call charges to other 08 numbers.

Cheers

Graham

Nothing, they asked my date of birth as confirmation. They then used information they already hold. I presume that as it's a contract (albeit 30 day), they were happy with my identity as they had already done a credit search.

Just for info, I wasn't looking at porn, I was trying to access a gambling website!

Re: Virgin VIP sim only £15

They are only included in the party monthly contract with phone. That tariff costs £26/mo.

They are not available on the sim only tariff.

Cheers,

Emi :-D
