Any chance of some email to SMS support? Free would be awesome ^_^

For example, 07712345678@giffgaff.com -> SMS to 07712345678

Hi all, We need a bit more feedback on this idea. We're not quite sure why you would want to use this and what you would use it for. Would an application on our website, which allows you to send a text message to a number be a solution as well? Or am I thinking in the wrong direction and you actually use it for something completely different. Many thanks, Vincent

It'd be extremely useful for automatic alarm monitoring. Either email or some web form would be fine - can always write a script to talk to it.. or maybe a REST webservice. All 3?+1

I can see sense in suggestion.  Don't think an app on website would be as good as doing via email.  Using email allows SMS msgs sent to be kept and managed in email client.  Would like to see this as option - so can be disabled if don't want it (if sending is not free), and also checking that the email really was sent from the users email address, not just the address given in the address field (which can be spoofed).  Possibly also support fo digital signatures?

Why want to use it?  1.  A lot easier to write and send an SMS from a PC than on phone.  2.  Use email client to do this - and manage SMS messages.

I use bluetooth texter, which lets me write SMS on Macbook and send from mobile linked by bluetooth.  But a lot neater if could just do this from email as suggested.

It would also be great to have option for received SMS to also be sent to the email address as well.  Ideally, if possible a way to sync SMS sent via email to the sent messages on mobile.

Great idea - used to use this all the time.

Say I want to get in touch with someone but either there is no coverage or I'm on a site where mobile phones are barred then I can just send an email to myfriendsnumber@giffgaff.com and they recieve as an SMS.

You can also use it as an email monitoring tool if you have a decent email solution (i.e. someone emails my google mail account, I set up a rule to forward messages from certain people to mynumber@giffgaff.com and hey presto - I can monitor emails from (certain) senders without having to use data.

There are plenty of independent services offering this. But they charge 6 to 10 pence a message.

One question is whether giffgaff users hope for this to be free or would pay a small amount

I would like to use this to message myself - being able to limit what from addresses are allowed to send to my phone's SMS via GiffGaff's website/email. The primary use for me would be for one of my servers to message me when another goes down. I'd be happy for the text to be taken from my balance at the usual rate...

My fiancée is in the US and she is with Virgin Mobile. As with pretty much every other US Mobile Network, each mobile number has what is called an SMS Transit whereby any emails sent to the address (usually of the format number@vmobl.com for SMS and number@vmpix.com for MMS) are sent to the mobile as SMS (or MMS if you've sent a pic to the MMS address). Obviously the standard 160 character limit for SMS is enforced, so if you email a message that is longer than 160 characters, it will be truncated.

I find this EXTREMELY useful as I can "text message" my fiancée without either of us incurring silly costs. The end users in the US are not charged for this service, as long as they have an unlimited text package.

As far as I know, no UK based Mobile Network offers this feature, and it would be awesome if giffgaff were to implement it - I know it would make my life a lot easier.
