Hi, some questions

[ Edited ]

At the minute I'm on 3 £15 a month Sim only deal, I get:

300 any network any time minutes
2,000 Three-to-Three minutes (don't use)

3,000 texts (use about 100 a month)

1GB internet (use 300MB a month)

Free Windows Live ™ Messenger chats* (don't use)
Free Skype-to-Skype calls* (don't use)
Free Voicemail (don't use)

I've heard some horror stories about 3 but they've been OK in the most part, I did have problems explaining to an Indian based rep when I asked about roaming in the Republic of Ireland, she asked how long I planned to visit and I said quite a lot as I live 30 minutes away from the border (I live in Northern Ireland).  She had no idea Ireland was split into 2 countries and I spent about 3 minutes giving her a history lession, but that was more funny than anything.  Also 3 filter their web searching, so you can't look at certain sites.  Hey you're all thinking, he wants to look at porn :smileytongue: and while it's true porn is blocked, my actual problem is I have an interest in WW2 and sometimes sites which have articles about the Nazi's come up as blocked as "Hate".

My usage is about 300MB of web traffic a month, with about 120 minutes of calls.   So PAYG won't work for me, it's going to have to be a Goodybag, which looks like a £15 a month one, like 3.  But I reckon I could make do with a £10 one if I can get my calls down.

Now the thing I see about 3 is they seem to round up their call charges.  Looking at my bill, when I ring my wife and her voicemail kicks in I usually hang up, it's a 10 second call, but 3 seem to round that up to a minute which gets taken off my exclusive minutes.  Do GiffGaff do the same thing?

I have an unlocked iPhone so I'll be fine, but my wife has a O2 Palm Pre.  She's locked into contract now, but when the contract is up it would make sense for her to move too, as GiffGaff have O2 as their backbone will she need the Pre unlocked?

Thanks in advance,

Jonathan

Bear in mind if your wife is on giffgaff too, the calls/txts to her will be free, so you may be able to get away with the goodybag with 100mins in it

If her palm pre is locked to O2 then it will work just fine on giffgaff without the need to unlock

I've just done a quick google search on my giffgaff iphone of some WW2 sites to do with nazi germany and nothing was blocked. I think 3 use a "walled garden" type internet, where they only let you see what they see fit, whereas giffgaff isnt blocked/filtered at all so you can look at whatever you like

Re: Hi, some questions

Hi there.

Let me answer your questions first:

Looking at my bill, when I ring my wife and her voicemail kicks in I usually hang up, it's a 10 second call, but 3 seem to round that up to a minute which gets taken off my exclusive minutes.  Do GiffGaff do the same thing? Yes, all operators charge for a full minute no matter how short the call is. If the call is greater than 1 minute then you pay per second.

She's locked into contract now, but when the contract is up it would make sense for her to move too, as GiffGaff have O2 as their backbone will she need the Pre unlocked? Her Palm Pre will not need to be unlocked.

When you calculate your cost, if you use 120 minutes then, with a £10 goodybag, you will need to pay for 20 minutes from your airtime credit - £1.60. This means that you will have paid £11.60 for the month.

Re: Hi, some questions

Welcome aboard, top of the mornin and all that mighty stuff!!

You made the right step in asking in here all about it, but you seem clued up anyway.

Regards to your usage, well you probably have read all the stuff on here and there i no cause to explain everything in depth. You will indeed benefit from the data, its not got much blocked, if anything as far as I can see. Enjoy the speed.

Roaming is easy peasy. As for roaming data, someone else gonna have to look that one up :smileyhappy: I put a little box at the bottom for you, copied from http://giffgaff.com/index/pricing and it would make sense for your good woman to switch also. It be a cheaper way to keep in touch if you dont travel together for a start. And of course all the other giffgaff to giffgaff stuff people will go on about :smileyhappy:

voicemail, most networks do this unfortunately, but its hardly anything to worry about. I guess they have to make extra pennies somehow :smileyhappy:

cheers man!

Re: Hi, some questions

Hi there stripeymiata!

I was on the exact same deal as you with 3, hated every day of the first 12 months when I had a skypephone that just wouldn't work, and then hated every day of the next 12 month contract when I realised it wasn't the phone coz I had upgraded, it was the network! Their staff have been nothing short of rude to me, and unhelpful at best...it was time for a change!

I've been with Giffgaff now for 2 months, I've earned £33.02 by helping others out and getting SIMs sent out, and I've only spent £22.50 total, so for each month I've been with them, I've earned another £5 roughly. I am sooo happy with their coverage and data allowances that let me use the Google Maps GPS that came with my phone and surf the internet to use Facebook and Myspace for free with the Goodybags. If you buy a goodybag and you haven't used all the minutes from the last one, they roll over, so even though I bought 100 minutes this month, I've ended upwith close to 400!

For all of these reasons, I would recommend that you get yourself and all of your mates and family onto the network, calling for free is so satisfying and the community are friendly, the staff actually listen to us and you can earn money back by doing things like asking questions!

It really is an awesome network, and I hope you choose us!

P.S. I am not an employee of Giffgaff, neither do I know any of them, I'm just REALLY happy!

Re: Hi, some questions

giffgaff is just about the only UK network left that doesn't make you feel like you're in a communist country and censor the internet for you by default, so as soon as your SIM is activated and you've received your settings you can browse any sites you want. :smileyhappy:

Everyone should have at least one phone on giffgaff :robotwink:

Re: Hi, some questions

If you have an iphone you can install skype to make some uk calls as they are even cheaper than giffgaff:

Calls to uk landlines are 1.4p per minute plus 3p connection charge.

Calling mobiles is dearer though at around 16p per minute.

They also offer free 0800 calls.

I only use it as back up and not replacement for normal network calls.

At the moment there's NO roaming data with giffgaff and so far no ETA for it being supported. In theory that's because there was no billing support so there's a chance this will be supported from Oct1 onward (when PAYG data billing starts) but that's just me speculating.
