We are going to be making some changes to our internet settings over the next few weeks and months. We're doing this in order to improve the user experience and in order to help O2 implement changes that they need to do on their end.
On Monday the 10th Feb We will soon start sending out messages to all of our iPhone users with a link to download the correct settings. They will be able to do this over wifi, or using their existing settings. We'll stagger the messages so that we don't overload our systems, so you might not receive the text or email straight away.
iPhone users don't need to do anything other than open the text that we send them. This will download the settings automatically. Other phones will be done at a later date, just sit tight for now. If you have an iPad you will be able to update you settings using the My giffgaff app.
In the very near future, texting "settings" to 2020 will only work for iPhones. It will not work for any other phone unfortunately. If you're helping out any member with something other than an iPhone then texting "settings" to 2020 is always going to be the wrong advice.
Unlike normal, you can't change these settings manually. We are making changes to the proxy setting which is hidden to iOS. You have to download the settings by texting "settings to 2020 instead.
The correct settings are now:
Password: [leave blank]
Proxy: [leave blank]
NB: iOS doesn't let users see the proxy, so don't accidentally edit the MMS proxy settings. Text "settings" to 2020 instead.
Do I have to change my settings?
Yes, but not necessarily straight away. Your existing settings will still work for a good while, but they will eventually stop working. It's a good idea to change them as soon as possible so that you don't end up with a nasty surprise when they end up not working.
There are also some other benefits. With the new settings you will be redirected to giffgaff.com/buy when you run out of credit and goodybag allowance. This page will be zero rated for you (we won't charge for it), so even if you're stuck in the middle of no where you can get your internet back up.
So, what about other phones?
We'll be making similar changes for other phones in the near future. We'll keep you up to date on those.
All the best,
Update 11:47 10th Feb 2014
First off, sorry for not updating this thread sooner today. I have been in about 4 meetings this morning already about these settings changes. There have been some complications that needed addressing and as a result we have had to change the strategy that we're using. We have things decided now.
If you have tried texting settings to 2020 this morning and not received the new settings then don't worry. We have delayed the roll out of this in order to allow for more testing. In a day or two we will move everyone over to the new settings profile on the giffgaff side and it will all work as explained. On that note, if you're willing to help us test then give me a shout and we'll move you over to the new settings early.
For now, please continue giving settings advice in the community as you always have. This change is delayed, so the new settings will not yet work.
We will also no longer be sending the settings directly to iOS members. Since the settings must be installed using wifi and the profile is only usable for a limited period this isn't practical as it will only work for a percentage of members. Instead we will be sending out instructions on how to download it via the app or through 2020.
All the best,
