Want to earn a quick 100 payback points and help test out a neat new feature on giffgaff? Read on for details. Edit: This offer expired in June.
We’ve had an opportunity come up to test out new functionality on our community that integrates your giffgaff community account with the social media influence measuring tool, Klout.
As a quick primer, Klout is a service that measures people’s social media accounts and provide an overall ‘influence score’ to show how many people your Facebook, Twitter, blogging and other online interactions reach and how many people interact with it.
Klout has been around for a few years but the forum integration is still in early days of alpha testing. It might be early, but we want to give everyone the opportunity to give this system a try to see what the benefits are and could be with this type of system. So, by end of day tomorrow (fingers crossed), giffgaff community members will be able to connect their giffgaff account to Klout and see their sphere of influence and areas of expertise.
Why are we trying this out, I hear you ask? Well, longer term, we hope that this Klout integration will be a way to
Help find and highlight experts in various fields to better help and support our members
Find and act on service issues faster – using Twitter and other social media to pick up trends from our members
Potentially hook into our payback model and reward members who provide help and support about giffgaff outside of the community
Empower members to highlight their own achievements – if you’re a blogger, a major Twitter addict or an amazing photographer on Flickr, we want people to know about it and listen to what you have to say.
Here’s an example of what this will look like on the ‘My profile’ page (when you’re logged into your own account, right now you cannot see Klout information on other people):
You can see my beautiful Twitter profile photo on there, along with my Klout score, what social networks I’m connected to as well as some areas that the system and others have decided I talk about online.
Now, it’s still early days so don’t expect miracles when it comes to identifying what you are influential or an expert in. When the service launched, it was convinced that I was an influencer in ‘Shoes’ and ‘Magic’. 🙂 The system needs time and people interacting for it to calibrate and figure out subject matter and influencers. It’s also an Alpha so there’s going to be a few rough edges here and there.
We want to find out if this is something that has value to the community and as such we need as many people to sign up as possible and give it a whirl. To help this along, we’ll be offering up 100 payback points for everyone who connects their Klout account to their giffgaff account from when the system goes live. We’ll keep this incentive going for a month from launch, from May 19th to June 19th.
EDIT: Look for the ‘connect to Klout’ button to appear on your profile tomorrow tonight/very early tomorrow AM during the planned maintenance window.

FAQWhat is Klout?
Klout is a service that looks at your social network and community profile and measures how influential you are on specific topics.
So, if you’re a tech blogger who posts reviews about the latest Android devices, a fashion enthusiast active on Pinterest or a nature photographer on Flickr, Klout would be able to recognise and highlight you as an expert or influencer on the subject matter of your choosing and give you a ‘score’ that tells you how well you compare to others out there.
What does that have to do with giffgaff? Lithium, our forum platform provider, acquired Klout last year and they have been working on getting Klout’s algorithm and understanding of influence to include more online communities and not just social networks. Right now the community participation will not count towards the Klout score but that is what they are working towards and this is our chance to help out this process. You can read more about Klout here: https://klout.com/corp/aboutWhat does an ‘alpha’ mean?
An ‘alpha’ build means that the product or service is still being built. You may have heard of a ‘beta’ version before. This is the one before that, so there may be some bugs and the visuals are not going to be final. You can read more about this specific alpha directly from Lithium here: http://community.lithium.com/t5/Suggestions-for-our-community/Participate-in-our-Alpha-Test-Connect-to-Klout/m-p/182576#M1157
Why are you turning on Integrated Profiles on giffgaff?
Our community is member-led and we do not have traditional customer support, but instead rely on members helping other members. We’ve worked together to build out things like the Approved Helpers quizzes, general guides and tips as well as the Knowledge Base to support people seeking advice or help. Klout’s integrated profile is another way for us and our members to highlight their expertise to people asking questions and for people who are interested in sharing their thoughts on social to better display and share the great work they do. There are likely other benefits we have not yet discovered and this is a chance for us to influence the service while it’s still being tested.
Do I have to connect my account?
Nope, you can keep using the giffgaff community and Klout completely separate from one another. There’s no need to take part. There’s a ‘No thanks’ button that you can click that will hide this functionality. Klout also lets you decide which accounts you want to connect and if you change your mind, you can always reconnect/disconnect accounts from your settings (klout.com -> Settings -> Networks tab -> Disconnect)
I don’t want to share my Facebook or other details with a company
This is also a good opportunity to review your privacy settings on various sites and decide how much & what you are comfortable sharing.
