If you're heading out on a cruise for the summer holidays, we've got an update for you about how giffgaff will work while you're at sea. There are a few dedicated networks who provide roaming services at sea, who we negotiate with separately to enable giffgaff members to roam. As with all roaming agreements, we review them from time to make sure they're providing the best experience and value for members we can. Unlike in the EU these networks are not regulated, so we need to keep a close eye on whether they are cost effective or not.
Following our most recent review of the current member experience, as well as the sustainability of offering data roaming, we will unfortunately be unable to provide data roaming on the below networks:
Malta Maritime [MLTMA]
Norway: AeroMobile [NORAM]
Maritime Communications [NORMC]
OnAir Switzerland [CHEOA]
Iceland: Siminn (Oceancell) [ISLOC]
Maritime Services with WMS/AT&T [BMU01]
Roaming on these networks for Voice and Text messaging (SMS) will continue, however members will no longer be able to use these networks for data roaming. Most cruise liners and ferries offer their own wi-fi, and in many cases it is also possible to pick up networks from nearby countries. As such, we believe the actual impact on affected members should be small.
Even though the number of members directly impacted is relatively low, we wanted to let everyone know in case any members require help/support around this change. In addition to this thread we’ll be contacting members who have used any of these networks recently directly to let them know about the changes.
We will of course continue to review our roaming-at-sea agreements, and if anything changes we’ll let you know.
Any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask and I’ll do my best to answer them (although thorny ones may need to wait for @gary_1989 to return from holiday.)
