On November 11 1918 the armistice to end the war was signed at 5am and would come into effect at 11am.
In those final 6 hours approx 11,000 soldiers died, many sent into battle by officers who knew the war was almost over.
Private George Ellison was the last British soldier to die at 9.45am
The last casualty of the war is recognised as being American private Henry Gunther who took part in a charge against astonished German soldiers who knew the war was over. He died at 10.59am.
It is however believed that men continued to die past 11am as news of the armistice failed to reach some fronts.
