Thanks for all your nominations, folks - nominations are now closed, and any nominations made after 12 noon on May 16th will not be counted. We're totting up the nominations and will post a new thread detailing the five charities that will go to the full vote very shortly. We've had a lot of great charities picked this year and I know that the money members choose to donate will make a big difference.
Thanks all!

Hi, folks. Has it been six months already? Payback is drawing near, and so it's time again to start thinking about which charities you would like giffgaff to support for this Payback period, and receive any donations made by members' Payback choice.
In December 2017, we paid out over £30,000 to each of the charities that the community picked. For some smaller charities, that can be a significant enough amount of money to be completely transformative. You can use this thread to nominate any charity you choose, so please take the time to consider the effect a donation like this might have.
Nominations are open until at least noon on Wednesday, May 16th, so you've got plenty of time to weigh your decision and nominate a charity. (Heads up - we may extend the nomination period this year, depending on the date we send the points statement prompting people to nominate a charity - if we have to send it later in the month than usual, we'll extend it to give everyone a chance to nominate).
So - have at it. Have a think about a cause close to your heart, find a charity where the donation will make the most good, and let us know who it is and why they're important to you. As long as they've not received Payback funds from us in the last two years, they're eligible for nomination. The charities that aren't eligible are:
- British Heart Foundation (received donations December 2017)
- Save the Children (received donations December 2017)
- Cancer Research UK (received donations June 2017)
- Bluebell Children's Hospice (received donations June 2017)
- Crisis (received donations December 2016)
- Great Ormond Street Hospital (received donations December 2016)
- The Alzheimer’s Society (received donations June 2016)
- Clare House (received donations June 2016)
You've got at least until 12:00 noon on May 16th to nominate your charities - our schedule and more detailed info is below.
May 1st - Charity nominations open
May 16th at noon - Charity nominations close (may be extended depending on the date the points statement email is sent)
May 29th - Voting emails start for all members
June 10th - Voting closes
June 11th - Vote winners announced
Early June - Payback selection closes
We're going to tally up all the charities that are nominated by members posts after nominations closes. You can only nominate one charity, so please consider carefully before posting.
We will not consider Kudos as an additional nomination, except in the rare event we need to break a tie between two charities. If you want to nominate a specific charity, make sure you post, even if someone else has already posted it.
We welcome nominations of small and large charities, on a scale from very local to worldwide. If you're nominating a smaller charity, please consider posting why it's an important cause and other members should also support it - many members will nominate charities that are familiar to them, so the more visible a smaller charity is, the better it is likely to perform.
We do considerable auditing of this thread to act against illegitimate nominations - please don't try to manipulate the system to boost a specific charity. We'll spot it, and your attempts will be for nothing. Instead, please use the time to advocate for your charity and let members choose for themselves.
So newer charities, smaller charities and non-traditional charities can still get a look-in, charities that have previously recieved money from members have special rules. If a charity received a donation within the last four Payback periods (two years), they will be excluded from the vote entirely. Out of the five charities in the vote, we reserve four spots for charities that have never received Payback donations. The history of charities who have previously received Payback is right here:
Charities listed in red cannot be nominated this period. Charities in black may be nominated, however only one from this list can go through to the voting stage.

Thanks in advance for all your nominations - the charities last period really appreciated your donations, and I'm sure we'll all be able to do a lot of good this summer. Just choose your Payback method - you've got until mid-June to make sure you've chosen to support the community-voted charities.
One last thing - the process for charity nominations is evolving. The way it currently works has been designed by members to make sure that all charities got a fair shake, and we've just kicked off a thread to discuss how the charity nominations and donation process might work in the future. Please come and join us in the thread in the Contribute forum and let us know your thoughts.
Best,
- Will and the giffgaff community team
