I just gotta pile-in on this... 🚇️ 😉
The item: GEC Alsthom MP-89 🚈♥️🤘
- MP-89-CC: Cab Controle (Ligne I et IV)
- MP-89-CA: Cab Automatique (Ligne XIV, later implemented on Ligne I)
Where did you buy? By contract between GEC/Alsthom and RATP confirmed in 1989. First unit into service 1997.
Members initial thoughts and review: I think @bluemoonbaz has already summed-up my thoughts very well, with few adjustments needed: 😃
bluemoonbaz It came with a [fourty] year warranty and I was [immensely] impressed by the build quality. Once [delivered], I did a cab scan and it quickly [reached] all the stations. The sound was [simply unbeatable] and I was [VERY] pleased with [RATPs] purchase.
These things are simply the best so far as urban transporation goes. They're clean, efficient, extremely quick (They'll outpace a Lamboghini Aventador to 50km/h with over 200 pax aboard! 🚈💨♥️) and have braking and accelleration that's so refreshingly powerful they could readily cause seismic activity if the need arose. The vehicle sound is so pleasing to the ear it's been proven to reduce passenger anxiety considerably, which has a clearly positive effect on passengers welfare and mental health.
When the UK Dept for Transport tried them out on a fact-finding trip in 2002 they were so caught off-guard by the sharp rate of acceleration they were all forced to alight at the next station and look up the French expression "J'achater nouveau briefes Hommes immediate, SVP!" with quite some urgency! 🚇️💩⚠️😉
(N.B: As it was to be the first automated Metro in France and officials decided to err on the side of caution, the ones on Ligne XIV were programmed with a very lassez faire approach to speed control based on British working practices, centred on the concept of not spilling ones Tea. To experience an MP-89-CA at it's very best, skip Ligne XIV and head straight for Ligne I - Where train programming dispenses with the British style entirely and relies solidly on tried & tested French practices! 🚈🇫🇷♥️ )
Rating out of 10: An 11 just doesn't do these things justice. Nor does 110. They're the best urban electric vehicles that were ever invented - Period! 🚈♥️🤘
Recommend? Yes or No: If I had EUR 0,01 for every time I'd tried twisting TfLs arms into choosing these as a replacement for the '72 stock on the Bakerloo Line, I'd have enough to pay the Brex*t Divorce Bill three times over. Sadly though, TfL seem to think otherwise for some reason... 😉
Quick summary: Simply the best. Forget your Prius, your Leaf and your Boris Bikes...These things aren't just quicker...But they've been bringing us high-speed, emission-free electric commuting for over thirty Thunderous years, and they certainly show no signs of slowing down yet!!! 🚇️♥️🤘
