We read a lot on giffgaff about airtime credit that went missing and rightly so, we need to be aware of illicit deductions.
My question today. Are there any positive reasons to subscribe to these services?
Is there a must not miss opportunity or is it all bad?
Hmmm. That's a fair question. Not many positive comments here - not surprising as "Payforit" is rapidly becoming synonymous with "scam"!
The idea of charging purchases to a phone bill (or airtime credit on GiffGaff) isn't all bad. On GiffGaff I suppose it works a bit like a prepaid debit card. You put your money in and you can spend it on purchases of "subscriptions". Unlike a credit card, if you keep top up switched off, you can't spend money you haven't got.
But wait, if you have a prepaid card, you can stop future recurring payments. There is a dispute resolution system, including chargebacks. If you are refunded, you won't have to trip to the Post Office to collect your refund, it will come straight back to the account it came from.
Interestingly, few of the "services" offered through direct carrier billing provide for any means of payment other than Payforit. Might this be because the credit card companies, Paypal and other payment processors wouldn't tolerate the level of complaints they generate?
If Direct Carrier Billing wants to compete with other payment mechanisms, it needs to provide the same levels of consumer protection as other payment methods. Why would you pay by a method which takes no responsibility, and provides no help, when it is used for raudulent purposes?
