Our last gaff on Lithium
The gaff team would like to thank you for your continued patronage to The gaff. Without your support, there would be no gaff! But, the good news is we will be back with you on our new Flarum community platform. We're looking forward to using the new community platform to make The gaff even better. We'll see you all next week with all the news, views and much much more .
Launch Date: New Community
Our new Flarum community will launch on Tuesday, 27th August. In order to launch as early as possible, giffgaff will be closing the current community for new posts at 10pm on Monday, 26th August. Some things won’t be available for launch but the team will be working to get them over asap. You’ve still some time to get an early preview of the new platform here if you want to get a leg up on how to use it before the coming Tuesday. If you’ve any feedback, just post it right there under the Feedback tag.
Payback calculations during the transition period to our new home will be handled a little differently for August and September. For the month of August, giffgaff will calculate based on contributions to the community between 1st and 26th August. The September calculations will then include all activities from 27th August through the end of September. giffgaff will get the monthly Payback calculations thread up super early this month to explain the plans in a bit more depth, so keep your eye out for the thread. Head over here for all the details about the forum migration to Flarum.

Realign payback seasons so that the Christmas payout comes in November by
Our member's idea states: Currently payback seasons run from December to May and June to November. Actual payback is paid out in the next following month, so payback is actually paid towards the end of December and January. In addition to helping members, I suspect this will also help staff and agents, as December and the New Year are probably a busy time for them. An interesting idea and one with lots of support. What are your thoughts on this one?
1gb £5 deal by
Our member's idea states: For 1gb of data and ultd texts and minutes. giffgaff should do something similar as it would be more easy and flexible for some people. In my opinion, £5 for 1gb of Data 300 minutes and ultd texts is a good option. Well we have had lots of changes recently and this could be a good way to grab new members. Would giffgaff go for it though? Add your thoughts on this idea.
On This Day In Historyby jammydodge
79 A.D. Mount Vesuvius begins stirring, ironically on the feast day of the Roman god of fire, Vulcan. The stirring was the first sign of the eruption that subsequently destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, burying them under a thick carpet of ash.
1793 The levée en masse was adopted by the National Convention which conscripted for French Revolutionary Wars all able-bodied men between 18 and 25 for military service.
1939 Vyacheslav Molotov (Soviet Foreign Minister) and Joachim von Ribbentrop (Foreign Minister of the German Reich) agree the Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact dividing Poland between themselves in secret. This crucial agreement set the stage for World War Two.

2019 Tech: Year So Far
It’s now August 2019, and this month marks around 2 years since Tech Developments started in the gaff, at least on my shoulders. So I wanted to mark this occasion with a one-off review of some of the major goings-on in the tech world throughout 2019 so far.
We start off with one of the most notable events of this year, the Huawei scandal, which itself is still ongoing. Flashback to December 2018 when it was reported that Meng Wanzhou, Huawei CFO and daughter of the company’s founder and CEO, was arrested in Canada at the request of U.S authorities on charges of financial crimes and obstruction of justice. This continued and is currently at the stage where the U.S is seeking an extradition hearing due to take place in 2020. Surrounding Huawei, the U.S government has also listed Huawei in a few regulations, as a company which is restricted from doing business with the U.S Federal Government and some restrictions are placed on doing business with U.S companies, and following this, influential companies such as Google, Intel, Qualcomm and others cut ties with the Chinese firm. This resulted in a media spiral, wondering what Huawei would do without Android, until Huawei’s Annual Developer Conference, less than two weeks ago, when the company announced Harmony OS, a new replacement OS developed internally, although we are unsure which device will see the OS first.
Moving on, we have had major leaps from Samsung and OnePlus this year. Samsung has launched the Galaxy S10 range and the Note10 range, after months of leaks. After the well-publicised controversy surrounding the Galaxy Fold’s screen issues, the success in sales that the Galaxy S10 range brought was a welcome break, and with the recent release of the Note10 range for sale, Samsung has every reason to celebrate. The S10’s sales and pre-order figures reportedly smashed the S9’s out of the water. OnePlus also launched its newest flagship range this year, the 7 range was launched in May this year. The 7 and 7 Pro drew and continued on successes made by the firm throughout the release of the 6 range, which included the 6T and the 6T McLaren Edition.
Finally, we also have heard lots of news about the highly anticipated worldwide network upgrade to 5G, and with lots more to come in the last part of 2019 and some exciting developments expected in 2020, we can only wait and see how 5G is rolled out across our country and around the world.
