I think I've worked this out.
When a reply message links back to the original post, if I hover the cursor over the backward link, the snippet pops up:
It doesn't matter whether I click on the link or the snippet -- the thread always scrolls back to that original message. But the link is easier to click, because I'm already hovering over it. So, that's what I use.
In the original post, when I click on a user name in the "xxx replied to " footer, the appearance looks similar:
In this case:
- if I click on the hover snippet, it scrolls back down to the reply post, as expected, but
- if I click on the member name link, it is treated as a normal web link and a new page is loaded. But that is the one I'm usually clicking on, because it worked going in the other direction.
