But being unable to text to 43430 suggests to me there is something wrong with the account that the sim is on, such as that it has not been used for 6 months and has deactivated. If that's the reason, then you should still be able to

If you manage her account, it would be better to log in to her account to do it:
- when logged in to your own account, it's only possible to add credit to another account, not buy a goodybag
- then she still has to buy the goodybag from the credit
- adding credit and trying to buy a goodybag from the credit is unsafe. If her phone is switched on at the time and has data enabled, the phone will most likely use up some or all of the credit before she can buy the goodybag. And she must do that with data still switched off (ie, by dialling 43430 option 2 not option 1)
- but if you log in to her account, you can go to https://www.giffgaff.com/buy/goodybag and buy the goodybag the safe way, without adding credit, ensuring the above cannot happen.
