If your job requires you to wear a uniform that you are responsible for taking home and washing and ironing, there’s a tax break for this!
I understand everyone affected is entitled to this allowance; bank clerks, receptionists, nurses, and so on.
You have to raise the query with the tax office yourself. You may be asked to provide proof from your employer that you are entitled to the tax break, but your HR department should be able to do this for you.
It’s not a huge amount of money, only enough to buy a couple of boxes of Persil each year, but that’s money in your hands and not the tax man’s!
The allowance can be backdated for up to seven years, if I recall correctly. You might get a rebate that will pay for a takeaway or two, all for the price of a stamp!
(Note that you can only claim it for uniforms, not just “smart office wear” that your employer has as a dress code!)
