Vodafone certainly took their time, didn’t they?
Anyway, as far as timescales are concerned, you must activate your giffgaff SIM (ideally for 24hrs) before you can fill in the number transfer form.
Then use the link below and input the PAC you have from Vodafone (it will remain valid for 30 days).
Remember number transfers do not take place on weekends. You also need to submit the form before 5pm to port your number the next day.
If you submit your port request by 5pm on a porting day, it’ll be completed on the next porting day. Later than that or submitted any time on a non-porting day, it will go through on the second-next porting day as below:
Between 17:01 on Friday and 17:00 on Monday - Tuesday
Between 17:01 on Monday and 17:00 on Tuesday - Wednesday
Between 17:01 on Tuesday and 17:00 on Wednesday - Thursday
Between 17:01 on Wednesday and 17:00 on Thursday - Friday
Between 17:01 on Thursday and 17:00 on Friday - Monday
NOTE: Requests made on Friday are processed on Monday. Requests made on Saturday and Sunday are processed on Tuesday. Also no transfers occur over public holidays e.g Bank Holiday.
*Porting days are normally the same as working days, i.e. Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays but occasionally extra non-porting days are declared, particularly around the Christmas holiday period. These will be published on the giffgaff announcements board.
If e.g. today was set as your “porting day” it could be up to 9pm this evening before the port completes.
It happens in stages, so it may be helpful to re-start your phone a few times during the day. On the day itself, the port can happen any time between 6am and 9pm. It is not possible to predict or select a specific time; however, most are complete by 3pm.
Here is how it should happen:
- Keep your old SIM in your phone until you lose service and/or it shows an error message (e.g. “SIM card registration failed”).
- Switch off your phone and insert your giffgaff SIM.
- Switch on your phone:
When the transfer is complete, you will see giffgaff on the screen and you’ll be able to make calls and texts as normal.
If it says something like ‘SIM card registration failed’, it has not completed yet - switch your phone off and try again in an hour or so.
When the number transfer is complete your number will be updated on http://giffgaff.com/dashboard
During the transfer process your giffgaff SIM will stop working for a short while and then start working again but you may find that calls, texts and data work at different times until the process is complete.
It is advisable to switch your phone (with the giffgaff SIM in it) off and on every half hour or so until everything works correctly, which will signify that the number transfer has completed.
Note: During the transfer process, any credit and/or goodybag on your account will be removed temporarily. Don’t worry, it will all be returned once the process completes. After starting the number transfer, do not attempt to top-up as it is likely to fail and you may lose your money. Once your number has updated on “My giffgaff”, the ability to top-up will be back to normal.
Hope this gives you some idea of likely timescales!
