A lot of the confusion is trying to find a year old beta app that no longer exists – or more precisely, it does exist, but has now replaced the released giffgaff app. So, ignore any instructions that mention using the beta app – they’re well obsolete. It’s the recently released giffgaff app that you should be using. Not trying to find an obsolete beta version.
[Aside: I’ve flagged the obsolete thread about the beta app to the educators amd asked them to consider archiving it]
antony_newman 2) When there is NO Cellular coverage - the giffgaff app has a meltdown Ie it does not work / you cannot log in
The app works fine on ordinary wifi – of the type you’ll find on a broadband router or mcdonalds or anywhere else that free wifi is offered. It doesn’t specifically need to be “wifi extra”. But if you’ve tried to enable wifi extra and it’s not working properly, that could be preventing you from connecting to an ordinary wifi service.
So, temporarily try deleting the wifi extra service in your phone settings. Then your phone may be able to connect to an enabled ordinary wifi service and the app should be able to long in to giffgaff via that.
antony_newman Does the giffgaff app need to be working / running in the background in order that I can connect to the Wifi-Extra network?
No, the giffgaff app is intended to be only a setup mechanism. Once you have successfully set it up, the phone should remember the connection and passwords, and connect whenever it’s in range of a wifi extra service – unless you deliberately delete it in the phone settings.
**Wifi extra did not work for me**, but that’s possibly because all my phones run LineageOS with deliberately no google apps. It’s a long time since I tried it, but it suggested I check my wifi extra password. But giffgaff doesn’t publish the wifi extra password, so it can’t be checked.
