giffgaff/O2 iPhone unlock

giffgaff/O2 iPhone unlock

As a rule πŸ“ of thumb giffgaff do NOT lock phone πŸ“± or sell locked phone πŸ“±.

HOWEVER due to Apple 🍎 and their stupid rules ALL iPhones are sold unlocked BUT lock to the network of the first sim card instead upon purchase.

So as giffgaff do NOT lock phones then the iPhone locks to patent company and signal provider O2.

Currently you have to purchase an O2 UK sim card and top it up πŸ‘† and use it for a month or two before O2 will unlock it for you.

However I suggest that as giffgaff now sell I iPhone 5C and 5S them giffgaff should now allow all giffgaff iPhone owners to contact O2 customer services and pay a minimum of say Β£15 to get it unlocked officially by O2

I thought Giffgaff had said on a number of occasions that the iPhone they sell is unlocked just like buying from Apple?

are you saying that the Giffgaff iPhones are actually locked to O2 once a sim is inserted?

I thought it's rather if you buy some phones from carphone warehouse that it locks to the first carrier sims inserted. All unlocked iPhones bought from apple or other retailers stays unlocked irrespective of first sims as far as I am aware.

All iPhones sold from Apple and giffgaff should stay unlocked, however if the owner bought it from elsewhere (such as Carphone Warehouse), then it will lock to giffgaff/O2. I had a strange feeling this problem would occur as soon as giffgaff became a recognised Apple network: http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Contribute/iPhone-locking/m-p/13256021

And O2 refuses to unlock it as well, as they redirect the owner to giffgaff and say it's up to them to unlock it. giffgaff needs to offer at least some sort of unlock service for these users.

Had a search and Giffgaff iPhones are unlocked like Apple Store iPhones according to posts by staff.

guide

I bought an iPhone 3g on 3 years ago, when they first came out.  I put my sim in it and it worked fine, then changed to another sim on a different network.  That worked fine too, and my 3gs remains sim free/unlocked to this day.  3 sell all their phones unlocked nowadays, and any phone that is locked to 3 will be unlocked free of charge.  A shame O2 are not as enlightened as this, as phones should not be network locked, just because you bought them from a particular network store.  No other device works like that; so why should a mobile phone be locked?

Its not all unlocked iphones, and it's not an apple issue (for once). Its phone shops like Carphone Warehouse that set up the phones (normally described as "sim free" rather than factory unlocked) to lock to the first network in this way (they get kick backs from the networks I presume). So the recommendation is valid (created an idea along similar lines myself about 2 years ago!) but the op needs editing. Supported

I'll support this if the original post gets edited to show the true situation.
