Data only goodybags

We have been working on delivering a data only goodybag and I can happily confirm that it these products will go live on the 10th October. In fact we are not launching one data only product but three. These are;

£5 for 500MB

£7.50 for 1GB

£12.50 for 3GB

Vincent has been discussing Data only goodybags in the Forum.  These products are to use with tablets, like iPads, dongles and other data devices.  If you wanted to tether with these data products, unlike our goodybags, you can.  These data only bags last for one month and can be bought from balance or with a debit or credit card (much like our goodybags).

If you run over your allowance (e.g. 1GB), we’ll give you an extra 50MB for free.  If you then use all of this we have a special data goodybag rate of 2p per MB until the data goodybag expires.  We are planning to send you messages to let you know if you have used your allowance, when you start using the free 50MB and again when the 50MB is used up.

And this is what the data only goodybags looks like.

We looked at data usage, went through lots of excel spreadsheets and double checked the fine details and we’ve squeezed as much data as we can into each of these goodybags, in fact if you use every bit of data in these products, giffgaff will lose money.  However we predict that not everyone who buys them is going to use all the data, so the overall data usage on these goodybags will balance out meaning that these really are the best value we can give to you.

Accompanying the launch of these lovely data only products is a new giffgaff App.  Vincent is discussing it in the Forum, so pop over if you want to take a sneak preview of features or contribute any ideas.

A data only product has been a popular idea on the Ideas Board, with over 100 Kudos, so it is great to be able to deliver and launch these products.

@jester gg only do standard sims, although some members cut them professionally using a sim cutter so you wouldnt know the difference other than a bit of writing is cut off. But i blame apple, surely something as big as an ipad has space for a normal sim? Even an iphone has the space, apple just wanted to be different.

@ scott1984, you dont need a special sim. you can buy the data goodybags as you would buy any other goodybag. i guess you would have to unlock your vodaphone dongle before you could use a giffgaff sim in it

@chaza218, in the recent discussion over the increase in standard PAYG rates, im pretty certain that vincent said that giffgaff were happy with the current goodybags, ie unlimited on the £10 + goodybags is not going to change.

@jestercole, as the data goodybags are just adding onto the existing range, and you dont need a special sim or anything, the current provision of only standard sims direct fom giffgaff continues. so you'll either have to cut the sim down yourself, or order a microsim from a user who is signed up to the MicroGaff scheme

I agree that it's annoying that Apple are the only ones currently using micro sims and they probably partly due this as another way to lock you into their ecosystem. However, in today (and tomorrow)'s tiny smart phones, every millimetre counts inside a phone and I expect eventually all manufacturers will use them.

@Hg80 - I'm afraid that, if you want to use to goodybags at the same time, you will need two separate SIMs.

@ashtonbb @bang912 - The One Plan SIM from 3 can be used in a dongle if you wish to do so.

@Scott1984 - All giffgaff SIMs are the same; you can buy a databag on any SIM. If you have a Vodafone dongle, you can you use you giffgaff SIM in it after you have unlocked it.

@Wilson1973 - Maybe if you ask for it. Bear in mind that they were thinking of calling them gigabags anyway Smiley Happy

@chaza218 - The introduction of these new databags will not affect the contents of the existing goodybags.

@jestercole - There no special kind of SIM for the databags. Thus giffgaff will only provide standard SIMs. You will have to arrange a Micro SIM for yourself like via Microgaff for example.

Do you have an official statement from Three that One Plan SIMs can be used in a dongle? It may be possible but I am only comparing official tariffs and uses of those tariffs when determining the cheapest/best plan for someone.

Good value compared to 02. I suspect that this will earn giffgaff a lot more in the long run because low usage people (£10/£15) will stop buying goodybags with unlimited internet and will pay the standard call and text costs to be able to have the gigabags on the same sim as their phonecalls.

Sorry to go off topic but could you clarify for a friend of mine that the £7.50 gigabag icon is red not orange. Just thought it best to consult the image creators than to continue to show him visually and technically (hex colour code from photoshop colour picker - #FF4D04) that it's red and him still not believe me it's red. As they say, get it straight from the horse's mouth.

Thanks and regards,

Excellent idea! Most people I tell about Giffgaff want to know if you do data only goodybags, now that you do I think more of my friends will join Smiley Happy

Will there be an option to choose a micro sim then on the "Spread giffgaff" pages when you're sending out to a friend?

Nice - the £5 bag is what I'll be using from now on, then. Though I miss those halcyon days of unlimited net for free!

500mb is a little on the low side for me, but it's a great start.

i noramlly use about 2.5gb on my phone a month, i would have thought they might offer some larger offerings.  also just to check the data goodybags still expire in 30 days?  if they lasted till it was used then i could make a case for getting one for the laptop to be used when not near wifi but otherwise its no use at all to me.
