As many of you may know, a new account management feature known as ‘SIM swap’ has been in the pipeline for some time and now we’re pleased to announce that it’s all up and running, ready for everyone to use.
SIM swap allows you to transfer your mobile account (including phone number, credit and existing bundles) to a brand new SIM card – and it really comes into its own if you need to switch between different types of SIM card.
In addition, our order of factory cut nano SIMs has now arrived at the warehouse and today we are processing our first batch of orders to Nanogaffers, so these should soon be available to order. SO, if you’re interested in getting hold of a nano SIM, then head to Nanogaff to place your order and read on to see how SIM swap can help.
It should only take a few minutes to do a SIM swap. Once you’ve received your new SIM, simply log into My giffgaff, go to giffgaff.com/activate and kick off by inserting the 6 digit activation code on your new SIM card and clicking ‘Continue’.
SIM swap is quick and easy, but please bear in mind that it’s also non-reversible and your current SIM card will stop working. There will also be a short delay before the new SIM card is up and running, so it’s worth picking the right moment. For this reason, there are a couple of opportunities to double check…
And triple check the details, just to be sure that we’re getting it right.
To help with this, you will see the SSN number for your current and new SIM cards on the screen. This number is printed on the back of every SIM, although with the nano SIM being so small, the first 6 digits will not appear on the nano SIM card (the first 6 digits will always be 894411).
And it’s that easy! Your account will usually be active on your new SIM card within a few minutes and then you’re ready to go!
Really hope this is useful.
All the best,
Due to the current service issue we're dealing with over here and due to the problems that members like andreww have experienced, we're going to temporarily pull SIM Swap functionality from the website to prevent it from happening to others.
Once we've dealt with the service issue and are sure that we've squared everything away, we'll check into the accounts that are having trouble with SIM Swap and see what's what, reopening it only once we're satisfied that we've got to the root of the problem.
Just a quick update on this - we are in the final stages of testing after applying a fix to SIM Swap and we hope to re-launch SIM Swap very soon.
Cheers for waiting,
As you know, due to some service issues which we were facing and the problems which some of you experienced with SIM Swap, we temporarily removed the functionality from the website to make sure that it didn’t happen to anyone else while we were looking at it.
On Monday last week, a fix went in place and we’ve spent the last few days making sure that the problems have been resolved. SIM Swap is now up and running again, ready for you to use.
The process usually takes a few minutes to half an hour, although as there may be a lot of people wanting to carry out a SIM Swap at the moment, it may take a little longer than usual - please allow up to an hour for the process to complete. You’ll see your old SIM will have service for a few minutes after you’ve requested the swap, before it flips over to your new SIM.
Please note that, to ensure the SIM Swap process runs smoothly, SIM Swaps can only be carried out between 4:30am and 9:30pm each day.
For any members who previously attempted a SIM swap, you will be receiving a PM to ensure that you’re up and running and aware that SIM Swap is ready for you to use again. If you’d like to have another go now the fix is in place, please bear in mind that the SIM you were going to swap onto before will no longer work – you’ll need to swap onto a new SIM. If you need a new SIM or micro SIM, you can order one here, or if you need a nano SIM, you can grab one from Nanogaff here.
Thanks for your patience whilst we put this fix in place. Now that we’re live again, happy SIM Swapping!
