Upcoming goodybag and tariff changes

former giff-staffer

Hello all,

Following weeks of discussion and invaluable input from you guys throughout the community consultation period, we are now able to update our current goodybag portfolio in a way which meets our needs as a business, but also makes sure that we are still offering great value to our members as well. Before going any further, here’s another opportunity for us to say thank-you to everyone who had an input throughout the consultation period – it really is essential for us to hear your views.

As we decided in the community consultation, the £10 goodybag will be updated with a 1GB Mobile Internet allowance and a new £12 goodybag will be introduced with unlimited Mobile Internet as outlined below. These changes are currently planned for 6th November.

£10 goodybag (updated goodybag)

£12 goodybag (new goodybag)

250 UK minutes

Unlimited UK texts

1GB Mobile Internet (Tethering will be allowed)

Free calls to giffgaff numbers

250 UK minutes

Unlimited UK texts

Unlimited Mobile Internet (Tethering not included)

Free calls to giffgaff numbers

Don’t worry, this change will not affect your £10 goodybag allowance at all if it was bought before the 6th November. If you have a recurring £10 goodybag then please be aware that the first £10 goodybag purchased on or after 6th November will have the new 1GB Mobile Internet allowance, so if you want to switch off or change your recurring goodybag then head to ‘My payment details’ on giffgaff.com to update your details.

Also, just to make sure there are no surprises with the changing Mobile Internet allowance on our £10 goodybag, we will also be sending out a usage notification to members to let them know if they reach their 1GB Mobile Internet allowance. If you do decide to continue using the Mobile Internet, you will only be charged 2p/MB for out of bundle usage up until the expiry of your £10 goodybag.

Whilst we’re making changes to our goodybag allowances, we have also reviewed our prices for some other types of phone calls and have found instances where it actually costs giffgaff more to connect the call than we collect from members. Where these situations arise it can become extremely costly and on some occasions, can leave us vulnerable to scams. In order to protect ourselves from this risk, the following changes are also being made on 6th November. Of course, none of this affects the price of calling or texting other standard UK mobile phones or landlines and we expect the impact on most members to be extremely small, as usage is low.

  • Calls to pager numbers (076) will move from 20p/minute to 40p/minute;
  • Calls to personal numbers (070) will move from 20p/minute to 50p/minute;
  • The Channel Islands & Isle of Man (currently in bundle) will be charged at standard EU rates and, as requested by adsb, this will be displayed clearly on the pricing pages once implemented;
  • Non mobile 07 numbers will be charged at 20p/minute (these are phone numbers which look like they are for a normal mobile phone, but in fact they usually connect to a hosted service on a geographic number). All of these number ranges will be communicated clearly on the giffgaff pricing pages and will be kept up to date, so it’s easy to see if a number falls into this category before you call;
  • Directory enquiries: In order to cover the wholesale costs for all calls to 118 numbers, these numbers will move from £1 per minute to £2 per minute. However, we also want to ensure there is a good value option for members and so we are keeping 118402 priced at £1 per minute; and
  • In addition to these changes, it is a regulatory requirement for all networks (landline or mobile) to charge 15p per call to the non-emergency police phone number (101) and so this charge will also be introduced. As requested by antraf 1982, this charge will also be specified in the Pricing pages on giffgaff.com from 6th November.

Finally, just to let you know, we will also be updating our terms and conditions of use in November as well, to make sure that they remain up to date and relevant as we continue to evolve as a company. The new version will be effective from the date they’re uploaded, so be sure to check out the updated version on 6th November.

Thank-you for taking the time to read about these changes and thanks again to everyone who has had an input throughout the consultation.

Mark.

This sounds okay to me. Although people may huff and puff at start. it will all ease off. Giffgaff is a business not a charity remember.

Thanks for the update mark Smiley Happy

I get the £15 goodybag, so it doesn't effect me... but it may in the future Smiley Sad
giffgaff head-scratcher

The changes to how calling the Channel Island and IoM from the UK will be dealt with will catch a lot of people out.

This has been an ongoing argument on the forums for over 2 years, and people were finally understanding it, now for it to change will make pretty much every statement people made on how it works irrelevant.

Will these tariff changes also be communicated via newsfeed/email and sms to people to check the changes ?

I can't blame gg for increasing prices that they loosing on that's reasonable and the option of one number at £1 for the directory is fair too
dabbler

These all seem like sensible changes that don't impact on 'regular' use of a mobile phone for a majority of people.

I'm wondering if, on the ' Non mobile 07 numbers' if a message could be played before connecting the call. You know like you get on a call to an 0800 number on a supplier who doesn't think freephone numbers should be free. It might be that someone is about to be scammed into calling a number thinking they are dialling a mobile...

"This number is a premium line, please re-dial without the 0" or what-not...
