As a very new member of Giffgaff might I make two little suggestions that could help other people, similar to me, who are wary of not having any form of 'voice' contact with a supplier.

Firstly. In the section where new members 'sign-up' make it more plain that care needs to be taken over 'Username' since can not be changed later. I got caught out here, and given better warning, I would have given greater consideration to the Username I used.

Secondly. When newbies have activated their new SIM and then entered their PAC code to bring their existing phone number in, it be made clearer on the e-mail saying success in transferring the number, it should be much clearer that now there might be a long wait (several hours perhaps) for FULL activation of ALL aspects of the SIM / Number. Tell us to keep our old SIM in our phone untill the 'Emergency Calls Only' message appeares letting us know the old one is dead at which point put new sSIM in and re-boot phone, then all things should be working.  Had I been given this simple (true) information I would been much more relaxed about what was happening

These are simple things to add to the information being given out already. Some of us are not readily adept at using the Community and so on. That will take time for me I know. I am an older person so perhaps have a different view on such subjects? (nearly 70).

Otherwise the transition has been mainly pain-free.

glad you managed ok @alastairross

there is 1 chance to change your username when you first wasn`t there when i joined

and not all transfers take several hours.although i think the third party who deal with them could be a bit more efficient

this old codger manages ok on the community Smiley LOL

I completely agree @alastairross I’d never used another forum (still don’t) when I joined gg and being a bit older I’m very wary of online stuff. I’m glad I chose the user name I did but would probably have anonymised it more if I’d known it would be displayed (and that I would enjoy the forum enough to spend the time here I do!

I also agree that clearer info about timescales withports would be reassuring

Hi @alastairross

This is a good post and I hope you will become an active member of the community.

It depends on what the Knowledge Base specialist @antonlg says, but I think that the topic of choosing a username has potential to be a new KB article. Very many members regret choosing their username and are unaware that their account name will also be the one they have for the community. If Anton agrees and a new article is written, a link to the KB article could be on the registration page so that new members are aware that once they have chosen a name it can't be changed.

A few suggestions as to what the article might include:

  • information that a username chosen by the member cannot be changed
  • a reminder of the type of unacceptable usernames
  • a suggestion to think carefully before choosing a name
  • a reminder that the account and community name will be the same
  • an explanation that currently the only ways to get a different username are to port out to a different network and then port back to giffgaff by activating a new SIM with a different username, or activating a second SIM which will have a different number which can't be changed.

Some excellent suggestions you make.
When I joined you had no chance to change the user name, but on the other hand you did not have one suggested or thrust upon you.
I guess I was more use to user forums so perhaps this did not catch me out in the same way as many others - we have a similar age by the way.
You make some excellent points about the number transfer.
Prior to joining giffgaff I had bee through it a couple of times on my work phone, and the IT department of the company I worked for talked everyone through the process which helped me no end.
Keep up the good work - we need more youngsters like you here!
