Thanks guys, this is really insightful. I have a couple more questions for those of you who would like to answer.
How important to you is it that the recognition comes from your peers or from giffgaff staff?

Peers first and foremost.

Now then, I'll just don my 'Devils advocate' hat for a moment...

If those awards are to be nominated by and voted on by the entire membership two things spring to mind.

Firstly, do you take on board nominations or votes from those who aren't in any real way active in the community and, if say, anyone nominating or voting has to have a minimum amount of activity here based on either time spent, posts made or whatever, how do you stop that seeming unfair?

Secondly; cliques. We know we have them and they will clearly have a large effect on nominations and votes. That's not the way any award should be arrived at. This isn't the film or music industry after all.

I'm sorry but, unless an award is for something clearly above and beyond the call, as in the case of Woody's VIG, then someone somewhere is going to take umbrage at the whole process.

My opinion is still that we can do without, after all I can already see if what I do here goes down well by the reaction of my peers (and very occasionally by giffgaff) and that is all I need.

I think a shout out would be more suitable, whether annually or every 6 months (the latter could be timed to coincide with the end of the payback periods).

Which reminds me whatever happened to the monthly, member shout outs?

Glad you brought that up,I did ask about this when @willp789  did a survey back in august

In the comments part of the survey i asked could we have featured members brought back,i thought it was a brilliant way to give a shout out to members over the year, but i never recieved a response to that or the outcome of the survey.

i gave some suggestions to @amy_b_d  to help move this forward a bit and to try and get the poll up and running, the 6 months or 12 months would be good to add to it.

I do agree that we need to make sure that however we thank and recognise you guys is as fair and transparent as possible. I don't know the mechanics which this can be carried out but I'm actually in a meeting right now with some of the team, and we're discussing what the future could like. I've mentioned everything that we've been discussing in this thread about having that peer recognition that we can amplify in a relevant way.

So with that, this is where I am at with the poll:

What would be the best form of recognition for you?
- A nice personalised shout out on the community
- I don't need recognition
- A personalised thank you is perfect
- Other form of recognition (Please give detail in the thread)
- Extra Payback
- Run by you awards led by either members or staff
- Becoming a V.I.G (Very Important giffgaffer)
- A sticker to proudly display
- A nice personalised shout out (social, insta, youtube, homepage)

Does this reflect where and what you guys might be thinking as well?

I would say both because i guess some members hard work could be behind the main community pages and so only the staff we see the work put in .

Hi @amy_b_d

That sounds about right ,but i would also add what @endorphin said around whether it should be yearly or every 6 months.

@amy_b_d

It's a hard one as not everyone is going to be happy with what's chosen .

So maybe a selection of them will suit everyone.

Personally iam happy for a 6 or 12 month shout out around payback windows for the community to credit others members contributions.

Maybe Giffgaff staff could do something for the unseen contributors as a previous member mentioned.

I don't think extra payback should be an option

V.I.G  is something that few members will achieve but it's certainly something members will aspire to gain.

I'd also be happy with the 6/12 month roundups of who's being doing what in the community but to make the logistics easier from the staff's point of view I'd suggest that they were offset from the payback periods so if they were to be 6 monthly we could have them in February and August for instance.

In this way it wouldn't put the community team under more pressure at the busiest times of the year and it'd also give members and extra couple of times during the year to look forward to.

We could have loads of catergories each time giving the chance for lots of members to get mentioned and recognised for their efforts and just as a few examples off the top of my head we could have:-

The winners of creative writing contests.

The winners of any photography contests that have happened in that period plus the names of the members who's photos have been featured in The Gaff.

Any members who've got to 1,000 BAs in the period.

Plus a lot more and probably better suggestions from other members as to what else could be included.

@bluemoonbaz

Good point, i don't think payback should be an option as that is already given under the enhanced payback.

I do begin to think that s bi-annual shout out  is probably better than one big award ceremony ... mainly because, once again, a member inspired idea was perceived to be hijacked and turned into an opportunity for staff to reward their favourites !

If we went back to member votes only only there would be the problem of perceived gangs voting for their friends. I say perceived because I do not communicate with anyone on here outwith the forums yet there are people on here I frequently agree with and could be perceived as hanging up with.  Similarly I have seen groups of people gather regularly in each other’s threads while never stepping into others !

Thats maybe going off topic a little but basically I think the original new years awards idea was great but has become impossible to be run in a way which is perceived by all to be fair

so like I say bi-annual, halfway through each payback period,it’s of categories, list those who have contributed .. have most of them entirely community nominated and let the staff also have separate nomination categories ... should keep everyone happy
