Is there any way to search within a single long thread?  (Searching across multiple pages, not just Ctrl-F on the current page.)

An example would be https://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Contribute/Are-you-taking-giffgaff-on-holiday-with-you-please-shar... where someone might want to search for their intended destination to see if others have had problems there.

I've checked with an Educator, who didn't know of any available option for doing it.

It's possible to search an entire board like Contribute, but apparently not a single thread.

Would be useful if it was listed in Options, or Topic Options, on the full website.  The mobile site needs it too, of course, but it also needs the rest of the Options Menu including Edit.

The Help board no longer seems to have a Search, now that the new thread screen does an automatic search.  That search is only on Solved threads, and can't be used to find cases that haven't been solved.

I don't want to suggest cluttering the page itself, but maybe there could be "Search Board" and "Search Thread" options in one of the pull-down menus?

@navvy - I don't know of a way and for me there have also been a few occasions in the past when I wanted to. It is a strange omission to not have this as standard.

Possibly using a google search may be a workaround in some cases?

Also I read about a different forum which I think is on Lithium where someone developed a Chrome browser extension to provide such a capability to search threads

http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/browser-extensions-to-search-within-a-forum-thread.415323/

but I do not know if that approach would work here or not and of course it is not ideal, being browser-specific.

I remebered that I had seen an idea on this in old labs and indeed has been carried forward to new labs:

IMO it is one of those things you don't need - until you do and then you think "uh... why can't I do that?" - uber-long threads do occur from time to time.

Thanks - I've now added my vote to the idea from @rixopod, bringing it up to 58.

Here's a link to where it was originally in the archive, where it has 47 votes.

While I agree it would be a useful feature, it's Lithium you've got to convince about its usefulness.

Now if giffgaff implemented Google site search I'm pretty sure there's a way of doing this...

And indeed, there is a way...

Or at least, from the bit of testing I've just done, Google advanced search seems to do this.

Using https://www.google.com/advanced_search, if you put the URL of the first post in a multi-page thread in the 'Site or Domain' field it appears to search the whole thread though the search may hide all but one result on the grounds that the rest are similar but you will get a link at the bottom to display the lot.

I've just tried it on the thread @navvy mentioned in the OP searching for 'Germany'....

Here's the URL of the result; https://www.google.com/search?as_q=Germany&as_epq=&as_oq=&as_eq=&as_nlo=&as_nhi=&lr=&cr=&as_qdr=all&...

@blackfive460

Great!  So now we just need that search built into a menu item that appears on every thread.
