Join @abdulf as he predicts the 5 new or improved features that he thinks will make a heavy appearance in smartphones in 2019. Check it out on the blog now.
Many of us welcome in the New Year by creating a set of resolutions, goals that commonly never last the duration of the year. Many of us choose fitness or health-related resolutions but have you considered one in relation to your phone. If you haven't then it's not too late to get in on the action. Head over to the blog for @wsjudd's 6 top phone resolutions you'll be sure to keep this year.
The battle of the rival smartphone giants continues with their latest two flagship phones hitting the market. When attempting to differentiate between the two, apart from the obvious things, it can be very hard to spot what makes all the difference to you. In this comprehensive blog, @shadylady compares the iPhone Xs Max with the Samsung Galaxy S9+ to determine which smartphone is better. Pop over and give it read.
Apple's Downward Spiral
You may have seen recent headlines across many different news outlets talking about Apple's stocks declining, and Apple's phone prices going down, but what does all this mean? Well, let's break it down a little bit.
Earlier this week Apple CEO Tim Cook issued a letter to shareholders detailing Apple's growth and expected growth over the next financial year. In September/October 2018 Apple hit $1 Trillion US Dollars in market value, well above other tech companies such as Google's parent company Alphabet Inc, however, now Apple is valued at around $700 Billion. Apple attributes this to a large decline in revenue from it's range of iPhones. In fact, sales of everything apart from iPhones have grown by around 19%. This is likely due to a growing challenge in the Asian market, with smaller brands being able to manufacture their phones cheaper and offer similar features to an iPhone at a lower price. Apple's profits have also seen a sharp decline, however, Apple's is not phased. Tim Cook says "Expectations are high for Apple because they should be. We are committed to exceeding those expectations every day."
So what does this mean for us, the consumers? Well, Apple seems likely now to reel in its product range a little bit, and it is possible future iPhones will be on the more affordable side. We saw a little bit of this after Apple's launching the X range of phones, the XR came out last and it is by far the cheapest of the entire range. We could also see Apple ramping up its operations on a store-front basis, with more options for trading in, and an easier process in transferring from your old phone to a new phone. We can only wait and see what 2019 brings for Apple and the tech industry as a whole.
You can read a version of Apple's letter to its shareholders here.

It reminded me of 'no man is an island, no man stands alone'" (tired16), "Stunning view. To kick things off for the year, I’m going to kick things off with a simple little trick to improve the coherency and appearance of your documents on Word. This method may work on other word processors or websites, so you could apply it to other platforms other than Word itself. Method:
On your keyboard, tap the dash key that looks like this – (to the right of the 0 key) or the equals key that looks like this = (to the left of the backspace key).
Tap either key 2 more times (so 3 in total).
Finally, simply tap Enter.
If done correctly, those dash or equal signs should have multiplied into a horizontal line, which acts as dividers between paragraphs – improving the clarity of your writing as your paragraphs are clearly split into different segments. You can quite easily change where the line is by pressing Backspace on the line that’s directly below it. If you enjoyed this, then you may want to have a gander at my other content located here.
Thanks for reading the first edition of The gaff in 2019. I hope we've all had rested holidays to prepare us for the year ahead. Since it's 2019, I have updated the calendar event for The gaff. You can simply download the ical like before and it'll add The gaff into your calendar for 2019!
Last, but not least, I want to offer my thanks to @brulaw who has redesigned the banner for 2019 (as well as creating the Christmas banner we had in December). We truly appreciate your graphics skills and dedicating your time to The gaff in this way. Cheers!
That's all from me, have a great week .
Thank you so much for featuring this month’s Creative Writing Challenge!
The topic was courtesy of @serving_n_a_j who had noticed an increasing amount of traffic congestion, and suggested it would be an appropriately ambiguous topic for the combined months of December 2018 and January 2019.
There are still a few weeks to get your creative thinking hats on as well as to read everyone else’s offerings (and ‘vote’ by adding your kudo to the Entries you like). The winner is the entry with the most kudos at the end of the month … although there are no prizes beyond the satisfaction derived from writing.
As was the case when there used to be a Competition there are two threads … an Entries thread and a Comments thread. Any discussion about the entries, questions, advice to the writers or suggestions belong in the Comments thread, and will be moved to that thread if put into the entries by mistake. The educators are very good about moving them on request!!
Anyone is also welcome to make suggestions for further topics … either in the Comments Thread or by PM to myself.
Thank you too to the educators who so graciously sticky the Entries thread each month and help keep the comments separate!
