Billing issue - here’s how giffgaff are giving refunds

giffgaff are in the process of refunding a group of members who have been affected by a billing issue we had with our system. This issue is now fixed and we’re currently working to make sure every active member wrongly charged gets their money back. We’re also getting in touch with members who are not currently with us to refund them as well. Following our investigation into this issue, we know that 90% of the affected members will be refunded £5 or less. To take you all through what's happened and what giffgaff are doing about it, head over here.

giffgaff Spread - have you recruited any members?

@aggy_agate is looking to share some nice and encouraging member quotes in giffgaff emails to inspire more members to benefit from giffgaff Spread. You might get picked to feature in giffgaff emails. So, if this is something you would like to find more about, head over and read Aggie's thread here.

June 2018 Payback Calculations

@alex_w brings us news that we all like to hear Smiley Tongue: Why, hello there Summer. It's been an amazing few weeks on the weather front, with more to come. Hope you're all enjoying it, staying hydrated, and don't forget to "Slip, Slop, Slap" as Australian TV indoctrinated into me as a child. Slip = wear a shirt. Slop = sunscreen. Slap = hat. Anyway, back to giffgaff matters - it's Payback calculations time again. The current status is here, and you can see where giffgaff are up to this month.

NFC Tags
by toxiic

In this week’s gaff, I guide you through how to set up a NFC Tag. If you missed what NFC Tags are and what they can do, have a quick breeze over this gaff edition then come back. Anyhow, I’ll be going through this in a simplified format. If you think you need more guidance or want to check if you’re doing it right, check out this more guided article.

Requirements: A phone with NFC capabilities. Space on your phone to download some apps to set the NFC Tag up. NFC Tags. (These can be bought cheaply from multiple places, prices depend on how many actions you want to assign to one Tag).

Click to reveal
  1. Open the Play Store app.
  2. Search in the box in the Play Store for “NFC Tools”.
  3. Download the app which has a 4 star rating, should be the top result.
  4. Search in the box in the Play Store for “NFC Tasks”.
  5. Download the app which has a 4.2 star rating, should be the top result.
  6. Turn on NFC on your phone. (For me it was Settings > Connections > NFC and Payment. But it could be elsewhere for you. Check online if you can't find it, for example "How to turn on NFC on Galaxy S5").
  7. Find and open the NFC Tools app you just downloaded.
  8. Go through the “Discover NFC” welcome pages by tapping Next.
  9. Go to the “Tasks” Tab. Located near the top.
  10. Tap “Add a Task” and choose which task (or as many tasks as can fit on the NFC Tag) you want to put on one of the NFC Tags (you can change this later).
  11. All the tasks you've chosen should appear under the "Write" Option.
  12. Now, take off any thick cases (thin cases are usually fine) from your phone and place the NFC Tag that you want to assign the task you just chose to right on the back of the phone so it’s touching it.
  13. Tap “Write”.
  14. You should get a “Write Complete” message like the one below. If you don’t, try tapping “Write” again. If that still doesn’t work, tap “Other” then “Format Memory” and place the same Tag up against the phone. Then repeat Step 9 onwards.

Apple Stats

Over the last week, Apple has revealed stats about the usage of its app store and the usage of apps on its mobile devices. Here's a quick overview of the stats that Apple has released.

The App store has been around for about 10 years now (its official birthday is on 10 July), over which time it has gathered a jaw-dropping 2 million apps in total, give or take a few apps that may have been taken off the store. Apple, however, still remains in the shadow of Android's Google Play Store, which plays host to almost 4 Million apps. This is most likely to be because of Google's more open development platform and release process through the play store.

The most downloaded apps of all time (excluding games) are as follows: 1. Facebook; 2. Facebook Messenger; 3. YouTube; 4. Instagram; 5. WhatsApp.

The app with the most usage, however, remains as Netflix (It's pretty obvious why).

The most downloaded games of all time are: 1. Candy Crush Saga; 2. Subway Surfers; 3. Fruit Ninja; 4. Clash Of Clans; 5. Honour of Kings. In total since the 2010, there has been close to 200 Billion downloads and $130 Billion in spending on apps.

In the UK, the #1 top paid app of all time has almost always been a driving theory test app.
