It's not often i dare look in Tips, just as i rarely looked in Labs, and there's a very good reason for it.

Have you actually seen the tips lately? I know giffgaff wanted to diversify the tips board to be more than just techy or giffgaff stuff, but really? I'm honestly baffled as to how they're getting away with posting some of that stuff, and getting payback for it.

"If your hands are dirty, wash them", "if you're hungry, eat something", "if your legs ache, sit down", these are my top tips, and they're better than 95% of the tips in there. But you see what i'm saying? That's how bad it actually is. Why even have a tips board if it's just spammed, just like Labs was?

Does the board have to exist, is it imperative to giffgaff to have a tips board, if yes, then why?

You don’t know if that earns them any payback though? Fact they’ve posted irrelevant stuff doesn’t mean anything is earned than post count and maybe kudos but if the post is rubbish, the kudos earned to then have some effect on payback are irrelevant. This on the post quality payback 2.0 assumption.

That at said I agree the bar has lowered in tips since the change. Nothing has been said by eds and posts stand so maybe it’s all part of activity being driven in direction of that section as I believe is one of the least visited or talked about. At least we are talking about it. It all counts. Could say negative publicity but publicity all the same. Shame though.

@matt_french A side effect of the drive to get more footfall in the tips section is that not all of the new content will be top notch but the forum nature means the dud stuff will just sink whereas good threads "should" rise above the rubbish, obviously that doesn't always happen Smiley Wink

There's a lot of tweaking going on to build a better tips section fueling much "debate" so hopefully when the dust settles the new tips section will be something that actually works. Can't say I spent much time in Labs either but I think having a more open tips section rather than it just being about phone / GG tips should draw in things that would otherwise be put ( wrongly ) in GD so it's swings and roundabouts.

None of the boards "need" to exist but if each one has a fairly clear purpose it beats everyone just chucking it all in one place surely ?

The trouble is that the facts of the matter are irrelevant. If people believe that they'll get rewarded for posting, that's what they'll do and in the case of Tips, they have every reason to believe that will be the case as, as well as payback, Amazon vouchers were on offer too.

From posts by @aggy_agate in this thread I believe that the 'specialist subject the bleeding obvious' and obviously copied and pasted tips won't be rewarded and those poster will be educated but as long as people believe they've got a chance of a bit extra, they'll post despite having nothing useful to add.

The only solution is to make that education highly visible but that could involve a degree of naming and shaming and we know that won't happen.

There is supposed to be a discussion group for Tips being started at some point but until that happens, @matt_french's solution of avoiding the place if it's too annoying seems the best bet.Smiley Happy

I posted in Tips without a thought about extra payback.

I received a PM quite some time later thanking me for the content and an award of additional payback.

I've not especially revisited, so it did not act as an over riding incentive in my case nor I suspect in many other contributers.

@blackfive460 Often tips have relevance only if they resonate with your particular lifestyle. Motorbiking tips would be of little interest to non drivers, yet tips for saving money on household expenditure, just might.

It can and is all very judgemental, most topics are.

A few months ago, one of the giffgaff staff mentioned that giffgaff was trying to make the tips board more relevant. Their incentive for people to post useful tips was encouraged through additional payback, which seems to have revitalised this board.

However, it's also resulted in more "pointless" tips being posted.

I guess that any incentive for people to earn payback results in more dross being posted.

For this very reason, I'm not visiting this community much these days because there is so much pointless and uninteresting rubbish posted on here these days.

But, this is a common trend - sooner or later things tend to even out and these forums improve once more.

Not just me who finds some of the tips comical then?

True, but neither do they, and that's the problem. It's like the proverbial carrot, in this case, payback/Amazon vouchers, being dangled in front of the donkey.

They'll keep posting because they've been told, come one, come all, post any and all tips and reap the benefits.

I think the Help & Support board most definitely needs to exist, especially as it's an online only network Smiley Wink
