Why can't debt ridden telefonica offload o2 in the Uk? Is it that no one wants them or that it's infrastructure has been badly invested in over the last few years. Does seem many are fleeing the o2 network to rivals....Hutchinson 3 where blocked by the eu to buy it but seems ever since no one else wants it....does make you wonder come next year if Hutchinson 3 will try put a cheeky bid in that we are free from the pesky eu....but lack of investment in a network is that really the truth no one wants it.
Telefonica SA are free to sell O2 if they want to but just not to one of the other UK MNOs.
The deal only went to the EU regulator because both Ofcom and the CMA blocked it here so once we're out of the EU nothing changes, they would both block it again because they considered that only having 3 MNOs would't allow enough freedom of choice for consumers.
There's been a long term plan to float O2 on the stock market via an IPO but their owners have now decided to wait until after Brexit to see how the market fluctuates and because the parent company's cashflow is now so improved that the money from the sale of O2 is no longer a necessisty.
They were planning to refloat it via an iPO thus returning it to the status it was when they bought it nearly 13 years ago when it was traded as mmO2 PLC
