A recent request in the Ideas board for a Windows compatible sidebar widget to display your giffgaff balance set me thinking.

Thanks to some great work from xmob, there is already a Mac OS X one available at

http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Contribute-Innovation-Promotion/giffgaff-Widget-For-Mac-OS-X/m-p/15...

PLEASE NOTE. THAT THE MAC WIDGET IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE AS XMOBS SITE NO LONGER SEEMS TO EXIST

Rather than build a Windows version, what if you could run the Mac one on Windows or even Linux. I did a little research and found a free solution that allows interoperability of Mac widgets across other operating systems.

Enter The Kludget Engine (Kludget stands for Klumsy, Lame, Ugly, Dumb but Good Enough)

http://kludgets.com/

The engine allows you to run MAC OS X dashboard widgets on Windows and Linux o/s

If all goes to plan, the widget should display your current balances/free giffgaff to giffgaff expiry date , blog posts etc

Note that due to website changes it will not show your actual live goodybag selection, but will show the remaining minutes balance from it

I have so far tested this on Windows 7, but would be grateful if people could report their experiences, so that we can confirm if this is a fully working solution

Don't forget to kudos Xmob's post as they did the hard work on the widget

No, the widget just provides a link that launches the blog or forum posts in a web browser i'm afraid

Oh ok, I guess it will be useful mainly for checking balance etc then.

I'm absolutely GOBSMACKED that this still works!  I haven't bothered updating it for months.

Just tested it with another account that has goodybags.

It does show the minutes left on the current goodybag, however it doesn't show which value of goodybag is active

The goodybag pickup sort of works.  It's able to give you the status (left minutes etc) but not the actual goodybag.
