I remember when GiffGaff used to be the best value on the market - a whole 4GB for £10 when the rest of the providers would give 1 or 2 gb for this!

I knew that, with the value I was getting, I was compromising on speed - but that was ok, it was still much faster than needed to browse the web reasonably, and stream music reasonably.

However, times have changed, unfortunately. GiffGaff is no-longer the cream of the crop.

Vodafone has launched it's new "Voxi" service - and do not start a discussion about the under-30s thing, that is not enforced - which offers much better value plans as well as free social media usage. Additionally, they are managing to offer much higher data allowances and speed... at the same prices as GiffGaff :/

Here is an example:

I was getting approx 2mbps to 3mbps on GiffGaff. On Vodafone's Voxi thing - which isn't even an MVNO, it's just an extension of Vodafone, my phone shows "Vodafone UK" in the top left - I am getting 10mbps. And this is in the exact same area and with one less  bar than I was getting on GiffGaff.

£10 On GiffGaff - 4GB Data, Unlimited Mins & Texts

£15 On GiffGaff - 8GB Data, Unlimited Mins & Texts

£20 On GiffGaff - 20GB Data, Unlimited Mins & Texts

£10 On Voxi - 6GB Data, Unlimited Mins & Texts, + FREE SOCIAL DATA

£15 On Voxi - 15GB Data, Unlimited Mins & Texts, + FREE SOCIAL DATA

£20 On Voxi - 45GB Data, Unlimited Mins & Texts, + FREE SOCIAL DATA

See the problem? GiffGaff is charging for a service slower by 7mbps while charging almost 200% of Vodafone. Vodafone, one of those big networks who like to overcharge.

Voxi does have a referral program but I am not a shill so I am not going to post my link here, I am legitimately surprised at how GiffGaff has grown so big it can sit back and relax as it slowly becomes like all the other networks.

Very few people make more than a pound a year in payback so I find it hard to see how this could be a decider.

Meanwhile on Vodafone proper I'm paying £5.01/mo for:

Unlimited minutes
Unlimited texts
80GB data
500 UK to EU minutes
Free roaming in 77 countries, (full allowance)
Support online, on the phone and in store

If you're talking about value for money, Voxi isn't all that great either compared with the best deals which are/were available.

Was this a special offer due to buying a phone / was this pricing included with the phone?
Also, I wasn't talking about Vodafone contracts as I wanted to compare like for like - PAYG with PAYG. But thanks for the info.

I think it must have been the success of giffgaff that prompted Vodafone to bring Voxi, which is a relative newcomer and priced to lure people to them. Time will tell if their pening gambit works and whether they can maintain their tariffs.

Also being a youth oriented network it's only available to the under 30's! Smiley Sad

It was a Black Friday handset deal @digitalitemsonly.

Voxi isn't PAYG it's 1MSO with a zero notice period.

I could add the chat pass, the social pass, the music pass and the video pass and my monthly airtime cost would still be only £20.01.

Voxi is a marketing ploy to suck in those without the credit for a full Vodafone package and so that they don't devalue their full packages by increasing their PAYG value.

Vodafone proper represents much better value than Voxi, (most of the time), if you actually dig into the figures, much the same way that O2 represents much better value than giffgaff if you dig into the figures, (and Three/Smarty obviously).
