I’m a year behind, I just got the S9+ direct from Samsung for £470 odd with cover and wireless charger but that included a £200 trade in for my 3 year old s7 edge which cost me £540 back in the day

Before you say it ..... I know I’m free to leave

An expensive phone is a status symbol for most people me included - this one is vastly over-specced for my needs.

It's Xiaomi with 3Gb/32Gb a hexacore 1.8Ghz processor 5.5 inch screen and is my most expensive phone yet - cost £74 on ebay in immaculate condition because he wanted an upgrade Smiley Very Happy

My current phone was a little under £200 around 2 years ago. It still serves all I need and more so I'm not looking to change unless my needs begin to exceed the capability of my phone, then I'll look around. Again with a max budget of around £200 (or less).

I've said it once and I'll say it again, the greatest phone ever made was the iPhone SE, it had style, function and I was able to type one handed without pulling a muscle in my thumb Smiley Very Happy if all phones were like that the world would be a better place. Their only around £150 now too...bloody bargain.

what do you all think of the latest phones that are available from giff gaff and elsewhere?
I think there's good and bad at all price points.

The better ones, in my opinion, are the ones which can be adapted into a desktop like environment simply by plugging them into a monitor.

The brands enabling that kind of functionality are the ones to really watch because they're doing the most to "unleash" the true power of the devices we all carry with us, especially those doing it without necessitating further purchases.

Those brands excite me having played with a few of them because I'm someone who made the decision to go mobile only several years ago.

What future phone releases are you looking forward to seen?
Huawei to me are the most exciting brand because of their cameras and other things like the above. They seem to me to be the most innovative and willing to explore of all the recognised brands retailing in the UK.

what is the most amount of money that you would ever spend on a phone?
I don't know.

I would have said that I wouldn't go much above around £300 but here I am sitting with a Huawei P20 Pro, (retailing at £649-£799 when purchased - £528 in my Black Friday contract deal), and not regretting it at all.

I used to think there wasn't much difference between the low to mid range and the mid to high range devices, and once upon a time there really wasn't, but somewhere along the line that's changed for this is a far better device than the £299 Motorola X4, in every single way.

Some of the differences are significant, like the ram and the camera, but most are not dramatic, what makes it dramatic is that every single aspect of the device is better. Slightly better screen, slightly better fingerprint reader, slighting better navigation, and so on, which coupled with the biggies like ram and camera make it overall a vastly better device.

If I'm still around when this contract is over, come black Friday, if Huawei's latest flagships are available for around the same price with an airtime package which meets my needs is available, I'm highly likely to go for it and pick myself up another £649-£799 phone.

It would have to be around the same total monthly contract cost though. That would be the key as to whether or not I took the plunge.
