I don't blame him for being slightly wary of that, there are groups of people on these boards who seem to do little more than go around hitting report for what are extremely minor infractions, or claiming tremendous offence in order to silence people and opinions which they don't agree with. Many have been targeted in such a way.

I used to own a house in France. I felt so lucky. It was the best thing I ever bought.
When I bought it the pound was worth 1.6 euros so it was cheap as chips. Now the pound is worthless at 1.13 euros.

The access to the other countries isn't dependant on Schengen, in fact it's just a zone without border controls. It doesn't give people the right to live within the zone.
Non EU nationals can for example move freely within zone if they have the correct documents, but they have no right to live within the zone.
Also, exchange rates have nothing to do with Schengen
