Ch4 Dispatches ask whether there really is a case for HS2.

The money would be far better spent improving local networks and where possible, reopening old lines.

Why don't there scrap HS2?

And instead spent the money improving the whole network!!!

@bethanykelly The conservatives would then have to admit they were wrong and that they have wasted money. Just like Universal Credit they will plough on regardless even though it’s a complete shambles., completely unpopuplar and involves screwing people over for little, if any discernible gain...it’s just how they roll. Smiley Mad

@hassan_javed
The best case I've seen for this project mentions that this will give greater capacity for rail passengers. This will then in turn potentially free up routes for Freight rail traffic.

A problem on the railways currently is that Passenger trains take precedence over freight trains which often have to wait in sidings for the passenger traffic to go through. This 'parking' happens regularly near me on the local railway. Such delay hinders rail freight development in England especially, I think.
Now others have written that this great amount of money needs to be spent on local networks. That is true, especially in the north for example the Liverpool - Manchester - Leeds/Sheffield - Hull route needs such upgrade. However do we really thank that this government, if it were to cancel this project, would spend that many on the North?
best wishes

I felt the programme was stating that money spent on HS2 could be spent on the northern network. The real problems are with the fractured franchise system & the lack of trains & carriages. It is ridiculous to have 2 car trains on very busy routes. Trains are beyond standing capacity. Will it take an accident for the government to act?
