Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,

With conquering limbs astride from land to land;

Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame

Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name

Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand

Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command

The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she

With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,

Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,

The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.

Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,

I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

Whatever that means?

Well that’s pretty damning @only_justme65. Whatever has become of the “Land of the Free”? Very very sad to read this. Smiley Sad

Certainly doesn’t mean “Only Europeans need apply”

I'll take your word on that @andyslc

I've read it twice. It appears to me that the author had trouble expressing themselves?

Not that difficult to follow if you take it line by line @nefarius

The first line refers to the Collusus of Rhodes, one of the 7 wonders of the Ancient World. The imprisoned lightning refers to the electric light within the flame which was a novelty when the poem was written in 1883 and huddled masses are the immigrants arriving in their masses in the 1880s.

Emma Lazarus, the poems author, was an advocate of Jewish immigration fleeing Czarist persecution in Russia. That’ll sit well with the far right who are probably agreeing with Cuccinelli.

Oher parts of the poem refer to geographical features such as New York Harbour. It wasn’t added to the statue until 1903 but was used to raise funds for the pedestal. Whilst not the original intention of the statue it has been synonymous with immigration since the 1930s and was mentioned as such by JFK.

That poem changed the significance of a world icon.

Thanks to google, Wikipedia and other sites for finding the explanation to all that. Smiley Wink

Your welcome @nefarius. It’s re read my reply and don’t know how “mentioned” ended up as “meant Jones” - attack of the autocorrect vs neuropathic sausage fingers me thinks. All foxed errr fixed now.

Sounds like he trying to rewrite history?...

mind you, their record not great what with importing slaves and doing their best to destroy the american indian culture.. different times I guess but should be trying to move forwards not backwards..

did he get rid of obamacare in end, not spoken to american penfriend for ages, she wasn't keen on him, said they were trying to impeach him then...

The only wall Trump is building is between Americans themselves
