I’ve received a new GiffGaff sim, I have topped up £20 for a goody bag.

When I try to put my sim into my iPhone 7, it says the sim is not authorised!!!!

Ive tried taking it out, leaving it for a bit then putting back in. And still it’s not working.

The sim is activated and topped up, but still not working?!

Can somebody help me asap and I’m not happy about this!!!!

Hi @myahfuller1 and thanks for visiting the community

Are you sure your iPhone is unlocked? The giffgaff SIM will only be accepted in a phone that is unlocked or locked to the o2 network. If you are sure the iPhone is unlocked please sync it with iTunes to complete the unlock. When syncing your iPhone with iTunes ensure the giffgaff SIM is in the phone.

Follow this https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201253 official guide from Apple on syncing your iPhone with iTunes. Once synced it should idicate the success message as shown below.

Hi @myahfuller1,

SIM Activations can take between 30 minutes and 24 hours to complete, when the activation is fully completed under your dashboard

here http://www.giffgaff.com/dashboard your new allocated number will be shown along with any airtime credit or active goodybag bundle. I suggest you turn your device off and on again periodically to see if that helps.

If the SIM activation is not completed after 24 hours then i suggest you contact a giffgaff agent to investigate. To contact a giffgaff agent please follow this https://giffgaff.com/support/ask/activationslink.

As agents deal with many queries, it can take up to 24 hours to get a reply, but usually you get a reply in a couple of hours.

Any replies from agents can be found on your "My Giffgaff" page or the page can be accessed directly following this https://giffgaff.com/support/questions link.

If the SIM is activated then check the signal in your area to check for any faults with the network in your area. You can do so by following this link https://giffgaff.com/coverage-and-service

PLEASE NOTE: the checker only gets updated once an hour so if your problem has just started, or you’re not sure how long it’s been happening, if it says all is good, keep trying for a while to see if it gets an update.

If the signal in your area is fine then you should try a manual roam which will update your connection with the network. Click on this link to view how to do a manual roam http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Using-giffgaff/Force-the-change-of-SMS-settings/ta-p/4871794

and try turning your device OFF for a couple of minutes and then turn it back ON again to force the device to refresh the network signal.

Thanks

Hiya @myahfuller1
Is your phone unlocked? If your phone is not unlocked, then your giffgaff SIM will not work

If your phone is not unlocked, you'll have to dial up your previous carrier and ask for an unlock. If your phone is unlocked, comment here again. Sorry about your problem

Hopefully this helped-

If your sim is not authorised then your phone is not unlocked. Where did you buy this iPhone of yours.
Is it a carphone warehouse phone? If so then they should have told you or you should have read the small print that iPhones brought from them will lock to the network of the first you put in.

Thank you all for your responses,

Unfortunley I've realised that my phone isnt unlocked, and I have already topped up the goody bag so it has started.

Is there any way I can get a refund?? Smiley Sad

You have two options:

  1. Request cancellation of the goodybag and ask for the equivalent credit to be added to the account instead (SIM will remain active, credit can be used for a goodybag at a later date); or
  2. Request cancellation and refund of the account (you will need a new account and SIM when your phone is unlocked)

Which would you prefer?

Hello
Thank you for your help!

Option number 1 seems perfect, as I do still want the goody bag but for a later date. I’ve requested to unlock my phone but I’m unsure how long that could take!

Thanks

Myah

Hi @myahfuller1

Raise a support ticket (link), explain that getting your phone unlocked is taking longer than expected, and ask if the goodybag can be cancelled and the equivalent airtime credit be put onto your account instead.
