Goodybags are all going to be 4G in a few days, but presumably those with 3G only devices will just connect at 3G.
In your case I presume the phone has UK compatible 3G bands but not UK 4G compatible bands. You could do a manual network scan and select the O2 3G band as the preferred network in order to stop the iphone trying to connect to 4G.

I bought my iPhone from the states. I bought a 4g goodybag and now i dont have either 3g or 4g. What should I do? I used to buy 3g goodybags and i didnt have any problem. I know it is because my phone is from USA. I just want to know if there is anyway to cancel my goodybag and buy another one?
@tavamirali, which model of the Apple iPhone did you purchase in the USA? Also, was it a SIM free (network unlocked) device?
