No it doesn't,you can switch off your phone's data connection and your GPS will still work.GPS works from satellites orbiting the Earth not the mobile network.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a space-based satellite navigation system that provides location and time information in all weather conditions, anywhere on or near the earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or more GPS satellites.

The system provides critical capabilities to military, civil, and commercial users around the world. The United States government created the system, maintains it, and makes it freely accessible to anyone with a GPS receiver.

Where you will use data though is if you use an app like Google Navigation that uses data to download maps as you travel but if you use an app like Tomtom where the maps are already stored on your phone then no data is needed and the app will even work with no sim card in your phone because all it needs is a GPS signal from the satellites to tell it where you are.

Do you mean gprs?

basically:

G = gprs , E = edge , 3G = 3G and H = HSDPA
They refer to your data speed, with gprs being the slowest, EDGE a bit faster, 3G and HSDPA (or 3.5G or super 3G) being broadband-ishly fast

if I was helpful please give kudos (by clicking on the gold star) and/or by pressing accept as solution button, thanks!
