This has been on both mine, and my mum's phone (both via Giff Gaff) to the same person in Aus. We all have credit on our phones. I've looked on the Q&A (about similar problems for texts sent but not received in Japan) and refreshed my network settings. Is there anything else I can do before I ask an agent?

You can use giffgaff abroad, call or even text abroad, you will need airtime credits as goodybags/gigabags are uk use only, also use country codes uk is +44
Roaming data charges can build up quickly. If you are concerned about this, we recommend disabling your handset roaming function whilst abroad, switch off mobile data from phone settings. Try using wifi where ever possible.
