Hi @gizzblue

Oh dear, that's not good.  If your text messages are being sent multiple times in error, it's possible to "force" the change of your SMS settings to solve the issue. This process is commonly known as a Manual Roam and resets the message centre number and hopefully resolves your issue.

Please click/tap the links below for Manual Roam instructions appropriate to your device.  Hopefully this will resolve your text problem.

Further information regard manual roam procedure can be viewed via this linkhttps://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Using-giffgaff/Force-the-change-of-SMS-settings/ta-p/4871794

Hi there Smiley Happy

Sometimes this can happen if there a glitch or service issue with the recipients network operator.

It should soon pass.

Thanks

Hi @gizzblue
hmm, weird...
How many characters is your text message made up of? As a standard text can only hold 160 characters and if you go over this limit the text message will be sent across two or more messages.

If this doesn't apply to you then please perform a manual roam that solves common SMS issues. You can follow this http://community.giffgaff.com/t5/Using-giffgaff/Force-the-change-of-SMS-settings/ta-p/4871794 knowledge base link on how to perform a manual roam.

Also turn your phone off for a couple of minutes and on again to see if that helps.

If your still having issues with these multiple texts address this with a giffgaff agent to investigate. You can contact a giffgaff agent here https://support2.giffgaff.com/app/ask/Top-up-balances-and-goodybags/goodybag-allowances-or-credit-ba...

giffgaff agents can take up to 24 hours to answer the posted question, but are usually quite quick to reply.

Any replies can be found in “Messages from Agents” box that can be found on your "My Giffgaff" page, or the webpage can be accessed here https://giffgaff.com/support/question

Are the people who are getting more than 1 of the same message all on the same network?  If so, then it may be an issue with their network.  If they are all on different networks, then possibly giffgaff or phone signal issue.

Is this something that is only just happening, or has it been like this for some time?

Yeah, this used to happen to me, and it seems that the cause is the "Balance Notification" feature which sends you a little message about your remaining balance each time you send a text. For some reason that feature trips up the SMS system and causes one (or more) duplicate text messages to be sent to the target.

If you want to turn off "Balance Notifications" then you can find the setting here:

https://giffgaff.com/profile/details#notifications

Turning this off used to solve the problem for the majority of people who reported duplicate text messages.

The tip given by @arkanon to turn off 'Balance Notifications' is a good one @gizzblue, and seems to work for most people.    You might also be interested in this thread which gives lots of tips about the problem, which seems to be quite common.  It helped me when I joined.  Hope you get the problem solved !

@gizzblue

In addition to what has already been suggested are you try removing their numbers (do make a note of them first) from contacts and send them a text by tapping in the number on the keypad, save the number afterwards, it may help. Even using a different phone format may work e.g. +44 then the mobile number omitting the '0' or the usual full mobile number, also try powering down your phone for a few minutes and back on again, this usually helps and does no harm.

Have experienced the same, it got to the point where I was putting 'apologies if this message comes through more than once", it has been behaving itself since doing a few tweaks ...balance notifications being on may have been the culprit, so that is OFF
