We have been using the £7.50 goody bag on a giff gaff SIM for over 6 months, and have no 3G. We have tried messing with all the settings on both this phone (iphone 4) and previous one (HTC desire), but have never got any connection outside wifi. Is it possible the SIM is faulty?
You need to add some settings for your phone to use internet and MMS on giffgaff. Many phone manufacturers have now started adding giffgaff's internet profiles to their phones, so the first thing you could try would be updating your phone's software.
If that doesn't help, you'll need to add the settings (called an APN) manually for your phone. Here's details of how to do that for most phones -
Android - http://goo.gl/iEsCXZ
PLEASE NOTE - The settings have changed recently and the password field should now be left blank for all phones.
iPhones are a little more fiddly. You'll need to connect to a wifi netowrk and then enter the address http://giff.ly/iphonesettings This will add the appropriate settings for you.
You may need to turn your phone off and back on at this point.
If you're still having problems, it may be something other than your phone's settings. Firstly, check the obvious stuff. Make sure your phone is unlocked or locked to the O2 network or your giffgaff SIM won't work. Check to see you have an active goodybag with available data or a PAYG credit balance on your 'My giffgaff' page (You'll need credit for MMS messages as they're not included in goodybags). Next, check if your phone has been switched to airplane/flight mode as this disables all connections, including mobile data. Lastly, check you have mobile data enabled.
If you're still having no luck, check for signal coverage and maintenance in your area using this site -
Finally, you can try what's called a manual roam. Check out this link for info and instructions -
PLEASE NOTE - Texting "settings" to 2020 no longer works for ANY phones. It's not worth trying this.
You may have a faulty SIM. You could try a SIM swap to get a new one . Details for that are here -
I'm sorry you're having difficulties.
Are you running the most up-to-date software for your phone?
It is possible that your sim is faulty but before you resign it to the bin, all APN settings have recently changed to simplify the process so it might be worth looking at this thread to see if this can help you.
Also, forgive me if I sound stupid here but it might also be that you need to switch on the mobile data on the phone. Also occasionally, you might need to switch off the wifi, on some older phones to make the data package kick in.
I hope this helps
