Samsung gt18190n, android 4.1.2

When trying to make a call I get message 'Not registered on network'.

 

I have re-set, rebooted, removed battery and sim. I know there is connection as wife's phone (samsung, also on giffgaff) works fine.

Is this a new phone? Is it definitely unlocked?
giffgaff SIMs only work on phones that are locked to O2 or are completely unlocked. You can find ways to unlock your phone here: http://giffgaff.com/unlock

You also need an active SIM to be able to use it. You know your SIM is active when you go to My Giffgaff and your mobile number is showing. SIM activations take 24 hours from your first top up.

If neither of these suggestions seem to find the cause of your issue, let us know and we can investigate further.

EDIT:

I must read more carefully.

Your phone not registering on the network is either;

1. the sim card is damaged

2. the sim slot is damaged - check that the contacts are all sticking up.

3. you are not in an O2 area - but as your wife's phone is connecting this is not the case,

 

Ignore this as nothing to do with network connection.

Have you set the giffagff settings in Access Point Names?

Is the entry correct.

I think your simcard could be damaged. Try carrying out a simswap.
