Hi everyone! A giffgaff member here.

my friends are heading over to Finland in 2 weeks and I was wondering if they will be able to activate their cards there.
also, will they be able to use the goodybags if they bought it there as well or is pay as you go the only option? Thanks!

@rthen23

It's better if they activate the sim in the UK.

Here is the critera for roaming.

Inclusive roaming is created for giffgaff members who typically reside in the UK, and is ideal for short trips to other places in the EU.

The vast majority of our members will be eligible without needing to do anything different, but if you don’t meet the necessary criteria, or go against our fair usage guidelines, then inclusive roaming may be switched off. You’ll still be able to use your phone in the EU if you have credit, but you'll be charged 3.3p/minute, 1p/text, 0.47p/MB. If you have a goodybag but no credit, you’ll not be able to use our service in the EU.

To make things easy, we automatically turn on EU roaming when you buy a goodybag. However, if we can’t see any recent UK usage, we’ll send you an email and SMS asking for proof of residency in the UK. You must give this to us within 14 days, to ensure you remain eligible and your inclusive roaming stays turned on. You can submit various documents as proof of UK residency. Find out more

If you fail to submit such evidence, you’ll receive an email advising you of your impending ineligibility for inclusive roaming and an SMS shortly thereafter confirming your inclusive roaming has been switched off. If you submit the required bits at a later stage, (or if we see evidence of UK usage) your inclusive roaming will be turned on again.

Morning

Card activation is no problem but they will be on PAYG only.

The EU regulations dictate that to get inclusive roaming the SIM must be used in the 'home' country for a period exceeding that while roaming (up to 62 days inclusive roaming in any 120 day period).

As the SIMs will not be used in the UK first in this case, PAYG is the only option. I hope that they have a great trip.

@rthen23 Hi welcome to giffgaff and the community

•You can now use you goodybag in the EU just as you can in the UK 🇬🇧 as long as your sim has been active and used in the UK 🇬🇧 prior to being used in EU countries

•You can check to see if it switched on here ⬇️

Profile Details

• To make things a little easier all members are given a 14 day grace period during which they are able to Roam Like At Home. However, if no prior UK usage is detected we will send the member an SMS asking them to submit proof of UK residency in order to remain eligible Please note a member can only view their roaming status  but can't actually enable / disable their roaming whilst in the EU.  In order to enable roaming this must be done via our agents ,here ⬇️

Using A Goodybag While In The Eu

• The process will include a few checks to see if they are a giffgaff member who resides in the UK 🇬🇧 otherwise airtime credit will be needed

•Also you will need to check your APN settings are correct here is a guide ⬇️

Internet And MMS Settings APN Guide

• More information on our RLAH can be found here ⬇️

Key Info For Roaming In The EU

Also If you use our services outside the UK in the EU and selected destinations for 63 or more days in any four month period this is likely to be deemed to be an unfair use of our service.)

Here’s something to help with your decision @rthen23

Eligibility for Inclusive Roaming (ie the ability to use the allowances included in a goodybag to pay for the service while roaming in the EU) is based on U.K. vs non-U.K. usage in a 4 month rolling period with the majority of usage being in your home country (note when in the U.K. having your phone turned off completely counts as non-use).

Obviously new members who immediately go abroad cannot display this level of activity so the RLAH regulations allow a 14 day grace period in which they can use their bag while roaming in the EU but they have to provide proof of residency to allow it to continue after that time.

So if your friends are UK residents then if they activate their sims before they go AND provide proof of residency while still in the U.K. then their right to Inclusive Roaming should not be an issue that they would have to deal with while away.

Obviously if they don’t want to start their bags now then when they activate their sims they can just add Airtime Credit and buy the bags later.

If they are not U.K. residents then if they activate the sims when they are in Finland they will only get the 14 day grace period of roaming after which it will be switched off and they will have to use Airtime Credit to pay for the service on a PAYG basis.

However whenever Inclusive Roaming expires and funding has to come from credit there are two possible tariffs.

If they still have live goodybags they won’t be able to use them but just HAVING them will entitle them to the cheaper EU PAYG rates of 3.2p per min, 1p pwr text and 0.47p per MB as opposed to the standard giffgaff PAYG rates of 15p per min, 5p per text and 5p per MB if they don’t have alive bag.

NOTE: The following differences apply 1) giffgaff calls / texts do not apply when the caller is out of the U.K. so these calls will be charged to a bag if valid or if not to credit. 2) calls and texts to any non-EU number would be charged at the rate of £1 per min and 30p per text irrespective of which tariff they are on.

So I hope that’s has helped you make the best decision for your friends but if you need any more advice on anything I’ve said do come back.
