What exactly are VPN settings and should I look at this?  (Have an Iphone 4s by the way).  Also, my brother in law has an Iphone 4s and his setting is MOBILE DATA, rather than mine which is CELLULAR DATA.  Does anyone know why this is different?

VPN stands for "virtual Private Network" and it really dosn't apply (though you can use it) to mobile networks.       You need to set up Giffgaffs apn settings  - which is mobile internet settings for your handset.  (search the forum for I phone 4s internet settinsg and it will all be explained).

What do you want a VPN for?

Is your brother with giffgaff? Many iPhone settings are IPCC configured specifically by the network you are using.
