This guide will help you set up your iPhone regardless of the model or iOS being used.

iPhone's running iOS 7.1.1 and above

giffgaff is now an official Apple carrier, which means that you can install the giffgaff profile on your iPhone to enjoy the additional functionality and also buy iPhone's in the giffgaff store.

Only the following iPhones running iOS 7.1.1 or above can install the giffgaff carrier profile.

  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone SE
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 5S
  • iPhone 5C
  • iPhone 5 - This model and below cannot receive 4G on giffgaff
  • iPhone 4S
  • iPhone 4

The giffgaff carrier profile cannot be installed on any other iPhones or iPads.

If your iPhone is running iOS 7.1.1 or higher, you will receive a notification telling you that the giffgaff carrier profile update is available.

Simply follow the on-screen instructions to install the giffgaff carrier profile.

If you haven't received the notification, you can force your iPhone to check for the update by using a Wi-Fi or a 3G/4G Internet connection and going to:

  • Settings > General > About

Wait a few seconds and the iPhone should prompt that an update is available.

Alternatively, you can install the giffgaff carrier profile with iTunes using this guide.

Just connect your iPhone to your PC/Mac running iTunes and then check for updates.

A carrier profile is a file on iOS which contains specific settings to your network.

When you install the giffgaff carrier profile, your iPhone automatically selects the most appropriate settings.

It will bring you the following:

  • The network logo displays giffgaff instead of O2-UK.
  • The Internet and MMS settings are automatically updated.
  • The Personal Hotspot function will be enabled. Tethering is not allowed when using the £20 goodybag with 'Always On' after you have used your 6GB of full speed allowance. See this article for more information.
  • The Voicemail button in the iPhone application works when pressed.
  • The ability to manually edit the proxy and MMS settings is disabled, but rest assured they will be properly set up.
  • This update does not enable Visual Voicemail but Hullomail is available.

Older versions of iOS - 6.1.6 and below

If your iDevice is running iOS 6.1.6 or below then you will have to manually install as set out below.

First perform Steps 1, 2 and 3 in the manual section below, this will ensure a correct first time installation.

I also suggest having a look at my other post in the top tips section, iPhone MMS settings and shortcuts, the easy way which will help as you will have to enter the settings more than once.

To use it:

  • Connect to a Wi-Fi network.
  • Click on this link using the Safari browser.
  • Using another browser will get a "Frame load interrupted" error message.
  • Download and install the giffgaff carrier profile.
  • Reboot the device.

This will install the giffgaff carrier profile's Internet settings including the parameters which can't be modified manually (i.e. the proxy settings).

The installed giffgaff carrier profile does not update the MMS settings.

Go to Settings> General> Mobile Data> Mobile Data Network.

iOS 7 or above users - The APN is located in a different menu.

Go to Settings> Mobile> Mobile Data Network.

Under MMS enter the following (Step 4 of the manual section below)

APN – giffgaff.com

Username – giffgaff

Password – [leave blank]

MMSC – http://mmsc.mediamessaging.co.uk:8002

MMS Proxy: 82.132.254.1:8080

MMS Max Message Size - 2097152

MMS UA Prof URL [leave blank]

The iOS my giffgaff App will no longer install the Internet settings due to this reason.

The giffgaff app is available on other platforms.

You have no Wi-Fi so you must manually edit the APN

If you have no Wi-Fi then you will have to manually install the settings below.

Please be aware that iOS users cannot edit the proxy settings which should be blank and are not visible.

At your earliest convenience install the settings using one of the methods above or update your iOS software or sync with iTunes (if available).

This guide assumes that your language settings on the iDevice are set to British English.

To check this head to Settings> General> International> Language and change to British English.

Step 1: Remove all old APN carrier profile's

Check if you have an old profile installed.

Go to Settings> General, and scroll down.

If you can't see Profile move on to Step 2.

If you can see a service provider profile, tap it and press Remove and then enter your passcode.

Step 2: Reset the APN settings

Go to Settings> General> Mobile Data> Mobile Data Network, scroll down and press Reset Settings.

iOS 7 and above users - The Reset Settings button is located in a different menu.

Go to Settings> Mobile> Mobile Data Network, then scroll down and press Reset Settings

Step 3 : Reset the network settings

Go to Settings> General> Reset and press Reset Network Settings and confirm.

This will delete your Wi-Fi password and any others stored on the iDevice.

You will need to enter your passcode, at which point your iDevice will reboot.

Now re-enter your Wi-Fi password (if available)

Step 4 : Manually entering the APN settings

Go to Settings> General> Mobile Data> Mobile Data Network.

iOS 7 and above users - The APN is located in a different menu.

Go to Settings> Mobile> Mobile Data Network.

Now under Mobile Data enter the following

APN - giffgaff.com

Username – giffgaff

Password - [leave blank]

Proxy - [leave blank]

The Proxy field is not visible and cannot be edited but it should be blank.

It can only be updated by Click on this link using the Safari browser, an iOS software update or iTunes update (if available).

Leave Visual Voicemail as it is. Try Hullomail instead.

Scroll down and under MMS enter the following

APN – giffgaff.com

Username – giffgaff

Password – [leave blank]

MMSC – http://mmsc.mediamessaging.co.uk:8002

MMS Proxy: 82.132.254.1:8080

MMS Max Message Size - 2097152

MMS UA Prof URL [leave blank]

Do not press the Reset Settings button when you've done this.

Step 5 : Re-booting and re-checking what you have entered

Once the settings are in, turn your iDevice off until the screen is completely blank and wait 30 seconds.

Turn your iDevice back on.

Now go back to Step 4 and double check that the settings are correct and have been applied.

If they have then proceed to iMessage, FaceTime and your Apple ID.

If not then go back to Step 2 and repeat the process.

iMessage, FaceTime and your Apple ID

Re-enter your Wi-Fi password (if available)

Go to Settings> Messages

Scroll down to Send and Receive and press your Apple ID and click Sign Out.

Then press Use your Apple ID for iMessage and Sign In.

Your iDevice will now verify your account

iMessage will now be set to ON.

Set Send as SMS to ON.

At Send and Receive, two addresses should be visible, your Apple ID and Phone Number.

Ensure that MMS Messaging is set to ON (if desired).

Reboot the iDevice

Go to Settings> FaceTime and turn it ON, then log in if you have to with your Apple ID.

With FaceTime, you can participate in video calls and audio calls with other FaceTime users.

You can connect using Wi-Fi, or you can use FaceTime without Wi-Fi if you have a mobile data plan*.

To use FaceTime, you need one of the following Apple products:

  • iPhone 4 or later
  • iPad 2 or later
  • iPad mini
  • iPod touch (4th generation) or later

FaceTime audio calling isn't available with iPod touch (4th generation).

*FaceTime over mobile data isn't available on iPhone 4 or iPad 2.

Go to Settings> General> Mobile Data and ensure that the Mobile Data and the Enable 3G buttons are toggled to ON.

iOS 7 and above users - These buttons are located in a different menu.

Go to Settings> Mobile

Go to Settings> Phone and check My Number is your number.

This number is editable, change it if it does not show correctly.

Your phone number can be found in My giffgaff under your membername.

Go to the Apple website to Manage your Apple ID and update your phone numbers.

Manual Roam

Go to Settings> Carrier and toggle OFF Automatic, wait for the any other network to appear and select anything other than O2-UK.

When No Service shows in the top left of your screen, toggle the Automatic option back to ON and O2-UK will automatically be selected.

Your iPhone should show a signal and the 3G/4G symbol should be present (if available)

O2-UK will show in the top left hand corner and not giffgaff, this is normal but annoying.

Feeling brave then it can be changed.

This is commonly known as a Manual Roam and resets the message centre number and also re-connects to the giffgaff network.

The message centre number is +447802002606 and can be checked by dialling *#5005*7672# from the iDevice keypad.

Turn off your Wi-Fi and check your 3G works by opening the Safari browser and going to a website.

Turn your Wi-Fi back on.

Hi , a nice guide but as long as you doing a new tip can you have the latest IP address 82.132.254.1:8080 showing , instead of the older one as some members are finding the old ones don't work sending mms messages

I wasn't aware that it was an old one. This is my point really there are so many guides floating about it can be hard to get the proper settings.
Even giffgaff own guides don't show the correct settings.

Can you post a link @w69d were it shows the latest IP address?

Do you need help on something?

Edit Just read your thread on the problem that you seem to behaving with the MMS. The guide above is a sound guide with no errors.

Is there something that you are over looking? Go through it line by line.

OP has different MMS Proxy setting to that in the GiffGaff Knowledgebase article:

LINK which quotes 193.113.200.195:8080

Which, in turn, differs from that given on the GiffGaff App which is as per the OP at 82.132.254.1:8080

Is it any wonder people get confused with these endless threads?

C'mon GiffGaff, you own the App and presumably produce the Knowledgebase article - if YOU can't get it right what chance have the posters on here?

Line by line. MULTIPLE TIMES! Put comments up everywhere about this and people seem to vanish in the middle of advice.

Off to a new network soon!
