The next nine months should see an end to the vast majority of inappropriate usage of 084 and 087 numbers.

The unbunded tariff must be implemented in June 2015. It will bring full transparency to non-geographic retail call pricing. The requirement to declare the Service Charge is already forcing many users to consider their position. This has resulted in a number of organisations changing their numbers to ones (mostly in the 03 range) that do not impose this additional charge.

The Financial Conduct Authority is expected to bring in regulation banning the use of 084, 087 and 09 numbers in the financial sector. Seeing the writing on the wall, many banks are largely getting on with the job. However, the insurance industry has barely started and appear to need to be told by a regulator how they should behave towards their customers.
