Great advice and information, thanks a lot. Companies have been making money out of expensive phone lines for far too long.

The "calling from abroad" normal lanline number is a great tip or you could use the weq4u app which automatically dials a normal landline number for you (if avilable), but be aware that it also finds alternatives to Freephone numbers whaich are of course free with giffgaff anyway!

Now that most of the banks have moved to 03 numbers there is no need to use an app and no need to go looking for alternative numbers. Calls to 03 numbers cost the same as calling 01 and 02 numbers and count towards inclusive allowances on landlines and mobiles. Stop calling the expensive 0845 numbers. Start calling the new 0345 numbers.

Several years late, the FCA will ban the use of 084 and 087 numbers by banks and insurance companies in 2015.

To be clear, a consultation paper means the FCA is considering doing something and wants feedback. It is not necessarily a done deal.

I don't understand how calling an 0161 number (for the Co-op Bank) is cheaper than their 0845 number.

And wouldn't you think that a bank that claims to be against exploitation etc would actualy provide an 0345 number?!

As I understand it part of the cost of an 0845 number is allowed to offset the line rental and fees associated with having the number which is not the case for 01 numbers.
