Hi everyone,

With the launch of 4G there are a few new things, so here are the few most important things for you to be aware of. This is all included in the KB articles and quizzes, but I thought it would be useful to call out the key things here.

Key Facts

  1. The first time you buy a 4G goodybag it will take up to 24 hours for you to see 4G come through, just like with activations.
  2. Anyone can buy a 4G goodybag, even if they have a 10 year old brick phone. You will not receive 4G service unless it is 4G compatible though.
  3. You do not need a 4G SIM to get 4G service, but you do need a 4G phone. It's still a good idea to get a 4G SIM though.
  4. You can tether on all 4G goodybags as they're all limited data allowances.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Turn your phone off and on again.
  2. Check you're in a 4G area. Check https://giffgaff.com/coverage-and-service.
  3. Update your phone's software.
  4. Make sure your phone is 4G ready. Only phones with band 20 or a 800MHz 4G antenna can get 4G on giffgaff. (Tip: any phone that says "4G ready" on http://giffgaff.com/phones are 4G ready).
  5. If it's been over 24 hours since you bought the goodybag and you've tried all of these things then contact an agent.

Another important note for those with slightly older phones: the iPhone 5 (and earlier iPhones) will not work on giffgaff 4G. They cannot be "unlocked" or "enabled" — there is no way to do it, and anyone who says there is is wrong.

As far as UK networks are concerned, the iPhone 5 is 4G compatible on EE and 3 (and on MVNOs that use either of these networks) only. This is because Apple did not incorporate the technology necessary for other networks.

All my posts are specific to you; I never copy/paste from a script.

If you need an agent, use http://giffgaff.com/support/ask and choose the relevant category. Please refrain from using the j.mp link, the SIM limit form, or "choosing 30" from the drop-down menu.
