I haven't tested it when I'm out and about so it may be my location [?]. I get occassional dropped signals here too.
Yes, speed is a function of location. Location affects signal strength and signal type.
A strong 3g signal could give faster download speeds than a very weak (technically superior) HSPA signal.
Results without signal type & strength are of very limited value
Several times I've brought up the idea of installing the Sensorly app (link) to find, & map out your local signal strength, but thats only useful if you have an adroid phone. Your phone should always indicate at the top the type of network your connected to.
My results are
Signal type = HSPA
Signal Strength = -87dBM (lower the better. Signal average between -70 & -113, but you'll have terrible signal at 113)
Ping - 121ms
